Sometimes there would be live video on RealPlayer! Except it wasn't really video. It was like short bursts of video fighting to escape from behind an Etch-a-Sketch screen. You'd see someone's face, it would freeze and go grey and all the features would slide off and the player would stop working.

I remember trying to watch Japanese Dragonball Z episodes in RealPlayer in 1999 and it would have been faster for me to print out the individual frames, assemble a flip book, and learn Japanese to voice it myself

We give thanks for VLC, for delivering us from lossy formats and buggy codecs, and freeing us from the burden of predatory monetization in just one aspect of our computerization. Amen.

Is it worse I used to rip DVDs for Angel and Vivid video and encode them into RealMedia and WMV? We even had DRM. The weird part were the screenshots. Most were timed in the stream but the “Money package” was me watching and screen grabbing. One had a midget in a suitcase that was switched.

Honestly, the bouncing cards is one of the most soothing things in the world. I still play Microsoft's now horrendously over flashy and "app-ififed" solitaire, but that's still the only victory animation I want to see. I don't watch the other ones.

I really tried to like RealPlayer for a while. I even ripped some CDs to RealAudio format. But that got me realizing that Real's formats just rebadge other codecs. At the time, RealAudio was just AAC in a proprietary container.

Cancelled Spotify because they wanted me to do some ridiculous third party verification (aka selling my data to whomever) in order to get a student discount. Back to the high seas due to corporate greed. 🏴‍☠️🦜

There are many RealNetworks alums that are a little sore about this thread ("haters gonna hate!"). I was at RNWK for nine years (1996-2005). There was a lot we did wrong, but we had the best tech for dialup users. Broadband was adopted quickly, wasn't it? www.pewresearch.org/internet/200...
