the complete embrace of nihilism and the rejection of being genuine is the greatest danger to humanity right now

This is what Nietzsche tried to warn us against when he wrote "God is dead, and it is we who have killed him!" So many misread this as Nietzsche being triumphant. He was anything but. It was a warning against how this void would cause increasing nihilism and existential dread.

I feel difficulty being genuinely positive about my (creative, inclusive, in a nice place, surrounded by smart and talented people) work around other people — it feels like I'm out of touch or toxic-positivitying things

I firmly believe everything being soaked in a thick layer of irony and nihilism is ruining everyone’s life and probably why everyone is so angry all the time now. You’re not allowed to enjoy anything or care about anyone cause it’s cringe, so people snap and take their anger out on whoever’s closest

i feel like a lot of people have decided that being cringe is the worst crime you can be guilty of. i see it punished all the time, so much so that entire hate groups form around people. shit is wild!

We had a brief moment in like 2020 or so where we collectively realized that cringe culture is bullshit and being cringe is free Was that just a brief moment of clarity by one sub population after a lifetime of running away from cringe

It's specifically the greatest danger to "Liberalism" because it leaves the door wide open for the most reactionary/backwards views because even though they are evil they give their followers some sense of meaning and belonging. "Earn a paycheck and die in an old folks home for the Dow" doesn't.

It is important and good to realize that nothing truly matters. Existence is cruel. But if nothing matters then the only thing that matters is what matters to you. If you can figure that out, that's your reason to exist. No gods or masters required. So? What matters to you?

The end goal of all of this to bully you into losing your empathy, humanity and will to fight. That’s why living and enjoying life is the best way to shove it to them. The idea nothing matters is a toxic one particularly when it comes at a time when nothing matters more to us

this hits me a lot rn regarding the recent incident in minneapolis i've been frequently flipping between extreme curiosity, concerns about future political commentary, and strong apathy (alongside a cynicism of apathy overall seeing as I'll likely forget about the event within the next 1/3

two months). I later settled on apathy after talking with a friend about the event, and knowing that for better or worse, it's unlikely that anything is going to come from it. But Onion Person, you're right, in that I should still focus on accepting who I am and how I will naturally react when 2/3

I understand why you see nihilism and inauthenticity as dangerous. At the same time, people can sincerely feel or adopt nihilistic views — it's not always affectation. Perhaps your point is really about the need for greater empathy and mutual support?

I am silly, I cry over little things. I hug my family and pets. When I was younger I tried to be a nihilist, but the silly little guy in me couldn’t be brought down.

whimsy and silliness are weapons we can use against said horrors. hold tight to your silly things, the behaviors that They™️ say don't matter, because they do, to you, and that can keep you afloat at a critical time. thank your appliances, sing to the plants, teach your dog how the dishwasher works.

In the '90s, there was a movie called SFW ('So Fucking What') about this. Starred Reese Witherspoon (1st movie role?) and Stephen Dorff, and featured Amber Benson. Benson (ironically, Tara from Buffy) shoots Dorff bc of his nihilism and shouts 'Everything matters' after she does so. She's right.

Is this how the world is? To be beaten and betrayed and then be told that nothing changes? It'll always be like this? If it's true what they say I'll be on my way But who are they to say what the truth is anyway? ... it isn't for the few To tell the many what is true - Hadestown

Or take the EEAAO approach, where “nothing mattering” means we don’t have to hold on to old ways of being that are hurting us. We’re free to find our own sense of purpose.

"nothing matters, so why bother?" nihilists - stupid - definitely losers - make incels seem well-adjusted "nothing matters, so why not do wonderful things for ourselves and others?" nihilists - based - cool people - actually capable of joy

There is "nothing matters" and going out and smashing everything in front of you. And "nothing matters" where you sit down and immediately know how to appreciate the wind blowing through tall grass for what it is. But for 3,000 years mankind hasn't quiet figured out which one to go to

Yeah, the belief that humans are fundamentally intrinsically evil is actually the exact problem that we're fighting against. It's not true at all. Humans are cute and adorable.

I agree, which is why I'm an optimistic nihilist and get annoyed when people use "nihilism" as a synonym for "pessimism," "cynicism," or "super pessimism/cynicism." To those who use it like that, the term "optimistic nihilism" sounds like an oxymoron, but it isn't at all.

Ok, but unless it's suppppper cringe though. Like I have a picture of a satanic cult leader in red lighting shirtless holding two blades, and let me just say, I cannot under any circumstances view that as not cringe. Also, cringe can be funny, like the office

Good morning Friends. I hope you all are safe & well. I am going to be dropping a slew of videos today around #Documentation, #Papertrails, & active, distinct, mutli-state court cases examining #SignificantMathematicalDiscrepancies in the 2024 election. These court cases are being #HeavilySuppressed

Embrace of Nihilism imo comes from people becoming jaded with the world at large, giving up on the hope of a better future. The default in our society and the world at large is that as you become an adult you should become jaded, with no one asking why did we create a world where that’s the default.

Technology and urban design, at least in America, exacerbates this issue. Having us live a life in boxes with little to no exposer to the world has eroded or killed community and has resulted in a population subject to misinformation and fear mongering, both of which expunge hope handily.

I think part of the reason this has become the prevailing ideology(?) is because of the way people get attacked for being genuine and vulnerable Like, that's why I never post selfies. Cruelty has turned being open into a weakness.

Please my friend save my child's life Please help me My child is very tired He can't breathe His body is turning blue and he is suffocating Please save my child's life Please he is in dire need of the device Please. A generous amount of $500 So I can collect the price of the device 😭😭😭

What if I’m genuinely a nihilist? I look at how we hurt and kill one another and think. Humans don’t deserve how good we got it. Especially us Americans who’ve caused more global harm than most nations.

Yeah I feel like “cringe” is a bit overused in situations where others are afraid of being genuinely hype about what they enjoy. Be excited for stuff, who cares if some joyless loser calls you cringe.

Considering that the thesis from nihilist thinkers like Engels was that nothing matters so we should try and do something better, has been twisted into nothing matters therefore you should be as non-empathetic and antisocial as possible is quite the problem indeed.

Less nihilism but misanthropy. Work in any STEM field that involves dealing with the public (especially in tech where most deal with the public directly instead of through some sort of communicators), you easily come away with the idea that "people are stupid, selfish, and cruel."

True. Although a lot of problems, at least on the tech side, is that we don't get to choose who we interact with. A person being abusive on a customer service call? You can hang up on them. You can't exactly ban some idiot from using your tech. And when you do develop the tech to do so, they call
