This whole fight over transgender stuff happening on X is so weird to me. The most notable thing about trans issues in the last 5 years has been the enormous, coordinated anti-trans activism campaign across the right, aided by moral cowards in the center. But that campaign is *never mentioned*.

They just talk as though the public spontaneously lurched to the right on a few specific issues -- sports, restrooms. And now they just take that as a given, a fact that trans supporters must work around. But how did that happen? Anyone? It's fucking *bizarre* they never even raise the question.

Like this. "You must strategically abandon the specific issues that the right has rendered toxic & focus on others." But then ... why wouldn't the right just be able to do the same thing on those other issues?

The thing that's insane to me for people with this take, is *how*? If you take as given that these issues are irretrievably toxic, how does the "trans community" stop individuals trans kids from suing to get medical care and participate in sports with their peers? What's the mechanism?

Even if trans people/allies decided en masse to give up, a single kid trying to transition or a single trans girl on a girl's team would be fomented against. We know this because even when there are zero trans people to campaign against, they will invent one! Just look at Imane Khelif.

Just a reminder that one of those "toxically unpopular" things is: "Doctors should be able to provide medically necessary treatment to their patients, when both the patient and the patient's legal guardian consent to said treatment."

Precisely this. "If you just give in on [x], they'll leave you alone. (Never mind that they're openly talking about moving on from there to [y] and [z])." Sheer idiocy. Yglesias's entire schtick of tone-policing and hippie-punching presumes a right wing that exists only in his mind.

That'd be like if the police responded to a hostage crisis by just killing all the hostages themselves. No hostages, no problem, right? In a sane world, we don't negotiate with the terrorists, BUT WE DO, AT LEAST, ATTEMPT TO SAVE THE HOSTAGES WHEN POSSIBLE.

I just can't figure these guys out. Do they not see how the entire info environment has been captured? Do they not think it matters? It matters but there's just nothing pols can do about it? I don't know what they think because they act like they took a f'ing blood oath not to discuss it!

It's not that complicated. Same with 'gender criticals' in the UK. They're weak, inadequate individuals. They enjoy hurting people with less social capital. There isn't any 4D chess going on. It's just middle school bullies with the capacity to intellectualise their dopamine hit.

of course they see it. of course they know it matters. of course they understand politicians could do something about it. a million percent sincerely, it really is just that they are cissupremacists.

If the right dominates the infosphere, if they can demonize any marginalized population they turn their eye on, then strategizing around *a current snapshot of public opinion* is almost definitionally misguided. They can change that opinion. Dems can't seem to, or won't try. All else is noise.

The short and easy answer is they all want to wet their beaks/keep their jobs in the only source of money currently in U.S. journalism. Most liberal and left leaning folk still have presumptive good faith for journalism as a profession that has not been true for decades. Literal Watergate babies

The refusal of Dem leaders and pundits to attempt shaping (or, leading!) public opinion boggles my mind. Foxnews/GOP do it frequently, but for evil. Like, George Floyd gets murdered on video and GOP voters even support BLM … Foxnews goes on relentless campaign to demonize BLM and GOP voters comply.

I don't know what to do but just keep repeating it so I don't go insane: the rise & eventual total domination of RW media is the single most significant political development of my lifetime and the entirely of the US political & media elite resolutely refuse to discuss or even acknowledge it.

Correct. 25% of this country are reprobates and bullies like the people they vote for, deplorables if you will. But the other 25% are decent people who have been brainwashed and RW media is responsible.

Having the owner of X with a personal vendetta on trans issues has a lot to do with the RW obsession. They’re obsessed w him and he uses them to push his hateful agenda. Trans anything is close to the top of his hit list.

When it gets to the US, watch the excellent British series, The Hack. It reminds us of the sheer depravity of the Murdoch media machine in England. Americans are swallowing it whole.

I feel like the fragmentation of the infosphere is the only thing saving us at present - though it is fragmented within platforms owned by oligarchs, making that fragmentation fragile.

💯 I've been saying it over & over again too, but it seems like voices in the wilderness, & I'm just a regular peanut gallery concerned citizen. And it gets worse every day - seems to be accelerating even. The way I phrase it is that we need a moonshot kind of counterpropaganda offensive in this /1

In a nation where speech is money, and where the billionaire class owns the media, there is little chance to change this dynamic. But that doesn’t mean that we can stop. Imagine if we had a free press, what would they be absolutely hammering right now?

Accelerated by the impending Ellison takeover of CNN (don’t kid yourself — Trump’s fluffer Carr will block Netflix, should WBD not go with Paramount).

The excellent civil war history Battle Cry of Freedom meticulously accounts how the rise of a new technology (newspapers) empowered wealthy slavers to gin up race hatred + panic among poor whites so they would fight and die to protect the slaver’s wealth. I think of that maybe three times a day.

from "Steve Jobs", by Walter Isaacson, 2011 Jobs met James Murdoch--he said-- "You're blowing it with FOX News," Jobs told him over dinner. "The axis today is not liberal and conservatives, the axis is constructive--destructive, and you can't cast your lot with the destructive people.

I know. Feel exactly the same. I think it was unfortunately inevitable though when Trump won this last time. It was a battle between capitalism and full fascism, and fascism won. Capitalism wasn't strong enough and got fully captured -- maybe willingly. This is part of what was on the line in 2024

Most Americans get their news from right wing media and I’m not sure they even know it’s right wing. I pity them too as fearing for your life from the threat of trans people, migrant convoys, kneeling nfl’ers, anti-facists, windmills and evil electric stoves must be awful.

Yeah, I laughed at what Elon (and the Saudis, etc.) paid for Twitter, and while on the balance sheet it has been technically a loss, the usurpation of a popular social platform to twist it to their own benefit has paid them back handsomely in the larger scheme

Can't believe that is true. All of the professionals in entertainment and law I know, many at the majors, acknowledge the successful takeover of too many major media companies by RW billionaire lunatics with visions of controlling the "message" while pillaging the field. Hanging on by fingernails.

The capitulation to "people's like Chris Rufo is baffling. He goes out and says "I'm going to make disingenuous statements about issue X to stir up a ruckus" then makes those statements and people go nuts, EVEN WHEN ITS POINTED OUT! Are people just valueless and looking for any excuse?

“All over the world, wherever there are capitalists, freedom of the press means freedom to buy up newspapers, to buy writers, to bribe, buy and fake "public opinion" for the benefit of the bourgeoisie.” -V.I. Lenin

Hi, Marxist here. The elite media and political class like this because consolidation of media suits the interest of the capital-owning class to which they belong. Not talking about it also suits their interests. There's a class war, they decided to win it.

This is correct and what Yglesias refuses to grapple with. What Dems did or didn’t do has practically nothing to do with what people thought the Dems believed and would do.

Yes x1000. I feel like it is discussed *less* now than it was in the blog era. RW control has massively increased since then and discussion of it has entirely disappeared. Crazy-making.

Thank you & please keep repeating it! In all the "what did Dems do wrong", no one addresses the elephants in the media ... the rw powerhouses that endlessly spread lies, lies and more lies.

He’s not the most reliable source but David Brock, having been an orchestrator of all this, wrote that the predecessor to RW media was an effective astroturf movement lead by MRC and AIM to bully mainstream and local media into “fair” coverage.

Culture wars die off with the generations of voters who made them thrive. Unnecessary deaths during the AIDs epidemic, anti gay marriage, ant gays in military, anti trans care. This perceived existential threat spans 50 + years for a few generations. Always shifting to another letter.

Matt Yglesias and the rest of the reactionary centrists are ruthlessly, dogmatically dedicated to the belief that there are Single Correct Ways (c) to handle all issues, that they know these Ways, and that the job of pundits and politicians is to ram the Ways into voters' skulls until they comply.

I refuse to believe anyone is that stupid so I can only come to the conclusion that they want to murder and rape (and sometimes both) us publicly and make sure we can never do anything about it. And the Epstein files showed that to be the case. And I would be the Andreesson chats continue that.

Like, all of these people are in fact the evil you think they could not possibly be because they keep doing exactly the things you would expect that type of evil will do. It would not just take specific stupidity, but impossible unluck to do these things otherwise.

They are monsters who have only wanted to treat human beings like animals because that is the last thing that this society has kept from their rapacious consumption, and you should think of them like that. They inevitably will have bodies dug up around them if you look hard enough.

And the thing is, even the Argument piece/poll that's driving all of this acknowledges that respondents aren't actually voting on this stuff. Voters don't care. They tell pollsters they don't want trans women playing women's sports, but they're not actually making electoral decisions based on this.

Yes, why do large swaths of people feel comfortable giving into bigotry denying trans girls the right to exist _as_ girls and then to be evaluated on the same term as other girls? Why do large swaths of people feel entitled to shove predatory discourse into kids' lives when they just want to play?

“ never trump” except for his whole political ideology. “Educator” on what? What not to do? How not to be? “Anthropologist” lol right. Except for trans people JFC 🤣 make it make sense

Because they're gullible dipshits who have fallen for a propaganda campaign built on the misogynistic lie that women and girls are inherently weak, and funded by billionaire pedophiles for the sole purpose of making trans women and girls outcasts and, therefore, easier to sexually exploit.

Large swathes (if you're gonna use the word, spell it correctly) of people think assholes like you are reprehensible, but we're still forced to deal with feces stuffed intestinal tracts like you. If we can deal with you, you can deal with trans people, you whiny fucking snowflake.

For pundits, claiming that social movements are "just popular opinion" and out of anyone's control relieves them of the obligation either to analyze the information warfare that produced that movement, or to do anything about it. That's the argument of a person who prefers to do nothing.

Do you think Yglesias is knowingly engaging? I'd always pegged this set as people who drift with the easiest path (definitely no offending of potential funders!). That means they are affected by information campaigns, and then in turn are unwitting participants in them. Is it more than that?

This needs a short thread. They’re professional bluffers. They strike a centrist position much like a student bluffs a balanced stance when they haven’t done the reading. It’s all about what they think they can sell to their audience to make themselves look engaged, informed and reasonable. 1/6

So they’re vulnerable to moral panics because they are not the type to say the king has no clothes. Instead, they dress up saying “the king’s clothes could be a little less revealing” as radical insight. It sounds so much more thoughtful and nuanced and reasonable. 2/6

The thing is, the king’s tailor’s are happy they haven’t been rumbled as frauds. So the centrists are happy to engage in debate “the right way” with right wing extremists like Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon and produce this collegiate reasonable aesthetic. Meanwhile the kids are shouting 3/6

I do think it's motivated at its core: "You must abandon these issues that the right has made toxic (where I sympathize with the right), to stand firm on other issues (where I think the right is wrong.) This gets us the painful compromise Americans need (exactly my ideal issue positions)."

And it started the same way, too, by limiting rights under certain circumstances like a time frame, a health danger, whatever. Once you start down that road it's easy to just keep eroding rights further.

No, *here* is the thing: civil rights protection for my trans kid is still very popular in my household and we will vote accordingly. (I assume by specifying 'trans adults' he's signaling we should give up fighting for trans kids?)

Are you arguing that the right is capable of weaponizing every and any issue against the left if the left concedes anything? Because that sounds like what you’re arguing and it is objectively false and it’s part of the disfunction of our current politics.

The message is clear. Everyone the fascist, psychotic Right does not like is supposed to shut the fuck up, stop existing publicly, and just go die quietly somewhere. Stop resisting. Stop protesting. Stop fighting back. 'Be Quiet And Let It Happen' says the Rapist.

If we just concede to the right wing on one more thing then they’ll start meeting in the middle! These useful idiots will never learn because it never matters to or impacts them.

MattY is perfectly happy to abandon trans people as much as a current polling snapshot dictates because he has no morals, no principles when it comes to marginalized communities. All too eager to label an issue - and any people associated with it - as toxic, and therefor disposable. He’s a scumbag.

My brother in Christ, Matthew, this is exactly and precisely why the Right does this and why they move the goalposts if you successfully defend against one iteration of it just to move the goalposts back at the first opportunity. Hayzeus Christie the man's brain is like an Etch-a-Sketch

Yglesias I think has truly become a reactionary. Like his entire MO has so centered on popularism that he has negatively polarized himself to the possibility people can drive change. As if the general public sentiment arises from a vacuum devoid of input from political actors.

I think you guys are missing his disingenuous greed motivation. After losing his job at Vox, Matty went really right-wing, like he needed the money, changing his views on a whole host of issues. And then gets into this weird Woody Allen conniption fit when you point it out.

I suspect popularism has always been a stalking horse for his transphobia. I remember when he started making comments that foreshadowed his later obsession with abandoning trans rights back around 2018.

His two basic arguments are: 1. Times are great and people should stop complaining about having to choose between food and medicine. 2. Democrats should be more bigoted. That's it. He,and all the abundance Dems are just regan Republicans

It makes perfect sense if your goal is to have the right always setting the agenda even when they’re not in power. You know, the way Dems always have to “reach across the aisle” but you never hear anyone say that about the GOP.

Matthew Yglesias is the cornerstone case study for the quote “It Is Difficult to Get a Man to Understand Something When His Salary Depends Upon His Not Understanding It”

On the right they lie about their genuinely toxic issues. Their rabid base either doesn’t hear about the moderation or they understand it’s just a lie to get elected and don’t give them grief about it. Toxicity wins. We can’t do that 4 good b/c our side never accepts that calculus and explodes. 1/3

The closest we came was on gay marriage where Obama said he didn’t support it but then after the election said his position was evolving, thus creating space for the public to follow him in changing and then we got more acceptance. 2/3

But in today’s environment we’ve seen that Dem positions are defined in the press and the public mind by what Rs say they are, not by what Ds say they are. Throwing anyone under the bus even as a lie to get votes is pointless so we shouldn’t be doing it even if symmetry says it could help. It won’t.

if the idiots making these points actually believed it they would be posting about how these things make it better for everyone instead of criticizing people for talking about it in a way they don’t like

I am struck by the history of the world were a group of "fewer people" were impacted because they were toxically unpopular. In rather horrific, genocide fashion. Seriously... one doesn't need to think too hard about this...

When it was revealed that Larry Summers was engaging in all sorts of bad weirdness with Epstein, even in 2019, Matty thought it was popular and smart to defend Larry Summers! Only a complete delusional tool would do this. That's why you should call him a Larry Summers Democrat. ;)

He shifted radically to the right when he got fired at Vox. But of course that was just a complete coincidence and not about needing money. Bringing this up is so unfair to the sanctity of Matty's. Can't bring this up even though it indicates actual bad faith on his part.

I mean you gotta discount Matty. He lies by saying, "Oh I don't take fossil fuel money," but then he says he does. Then he says pointing this out is not "good faith." He is delusional by thinking his Woody-Allen routine on Joe Rogin's show had positive results.

First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out because they seemed toxically unpopular and were far fewer people than the still popular folks I'd decided it would be more to my advantage to support...

This is when you remind half wits like this who have no concept of history that MLK was less popular than trannies when he was doing his thing. It took people with guts, morals, leadership and vision to bring the country to where it is. If it were up to these clowns, we'd still have slavery.

Yup, and we’ve had enough decades of bad faith culture war politics this is just obvious now. If you compromise with a bad faith wedge issue, you just elevate and validate the concern. The answer a punchy attack back on the point (e.g., the Epstein class want to strip search kids) to show strength

Yglesias is the perfect avatar for Blue Maga. He has no principles beyond self-aggrandisement, and applies just enough pseudointellectual posturing to fly his reactionary pablum under the radar of uninformed centrists.

The RW game is obvious: always be to the right of whatever the most centrist D will accept. Ds giving up on a RW issue only means that the RW *must* move further right to differentiate itself. And 30% - 40% will automatically agree once Fox sells it to them.

He doesn't concede that "the right has rendered [the issues] toxic," he and the rest of the popularists (stupidly) believe that public opinion on things like trans rights is sui generis, and pols can only respond to it, not shape it.

But in the discussion, they acknowledge that public opinion *changed*, pretty sharply, over the course of a few years, on these specific things. I guess that's just ... dark spirits? Bad humors?

They don't think public opinion is *static,* rather that it's not meaningfully influenced by persuasion by politicians. I think on trans issues in particular, they believe that voters just found out about trans people (esp. youth transition and sports) and decided "we don't like that" on their own.

And we’ve literally seen this with the UK where it started with sports and gender-affirming care for minors and then went to literally all public accommodations for trans people. It’s not theoretical.

I think they're just mostly arguing for a new/different *focus*, but again we're back to the basic point: they didn't choose the goddamn focus!

99% I agree with you, but there’s this: The left has a tendency to rise to whatever bait the right casts on the waters, but we’re not as effective at making the news as first movers as we might be. When was the last time some lefty went balls out on repeat for some idea that shocked the status quo?

People like this just LET the Right dictate the conversation, and take the Overton window wherever they want to take it without putting up a fight. That's one of the biggest reasons people hate them so much, their passivity when it comes to controlling the narrative.

Matt Yglesias is telling on himself in a big way here. The only reason he can fathom for supporting trans rights is that it's electorally advantageous. Not because it's inherently right or good to protect the rights of minorities. Once he's ceded that, there's no reason to listen to him.

We’re talking about the same people who turned “Face masks prevent the spread of germs” into a controversial statement. There’s no working around this, only through!

I'm trying to figure out of Matt is "Dilbert Smart" as in THINKS he's the smartest guy in the room but he's the dumbest OR if he thinks he's a clever mole pretending to be on the left but giving the absolute worst takes on everything to trick people. Either way, I'd rather just ignore his idiocy.

They do. Over and over and over. Which is why it’s not worth taking anything they say as a starting point for a good faith debate. It’s just noise.

LGBT books were the first burned in Germany, gay men were the last to be liberated from the Holocaust years after the war ended. The LGBT/minority book bans in Florida should have been the red line, and now we have concentration camps again.

Speaking as someone who is never sure if they are an extremely left moderate or an extremely moderate leftist, and who spends a lot of time arguing with, “the left”, you are not being helpful with this. There is a difference between pragmatism and contrarianism, particularly with fundamental rights

The Right will and does. The willful blindness to the bad faith and Overton Window pushing of the Right is so frustrating. Are they rubes, forever to falling for the same schtick over and over again, redrawing lines that they insist the Right not cross "...or so help me, THIS time I'm out!"??

Whatever the position is, the right will be against it. That’s how it works and you gotta have worms for brains not to see that. Are we going to give in on trans having access to public restrooms and trans youth should not exist? Because those things are “too extreme”? Are they really?

The right is already doing that, is the point. On immigration it focuses on securitization, where it enjoys a polling advantage; the left in the US doesn't counter by focusing on where it is strong (path to citizenship). Same with LGBTQ rights.
