When I worked in WaPo Opinions in 2017-2018, senior editors specifically told junior editors not to factcheck Marc Thiessen and other MAGA columnists, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to publish anything by them at all, and “we need them for intellectual diversity.”

Btw I’ve been pitching a piece about this, some of my other observations while in that section and how it got to its current state of kak, hmu if you’re an editor who wants to pay me for it.

This is exactly why I finally dumped my Wapo subscription. That the newspaper would platform Hugh Hewitt and Marc Thiessen, both patent liars, was a bridge too far. Give me a George Will or Charles Krauthammer anytime; I disagreed with them but they forced me to clarify my own thinking.

Radley, if you don’t know, was a canary in the coal mine at WaPo Opinions, writing deeply reported pieces about police violence, which were utterly ignored by Opinions editors, who seemed hellbent on them NOT being seen during the peak of national interest. Then laid off for vague traffic reasons.

They focus on the diversity but not the intellectual part. You should have a variety of smart, thoughtful opinions, not diversify your opinion page by pairing each smart column with a dumb column or each evidence-based piece with a fully false one.

My favorite Thiessen trope is the "here's what Trump should say in the SOTU/Convention Speech/Debate" column...and then Trump does the exact opposite and Thiessen praises him for how brilliant he is. Never fails...

We need to see the opinions of stupid people as much or more than intelligent people. Tyranny of the majority at work.

If you have the right subscriptions and absolutely nothing better to do for the next two or three hours, go back and look at some of the George Will and Charles Krauthammer stuff they published back in the day. The Post used to be a great paper, but that mindset went back decades.

I worked at Salon for 14 years. David Talbot spent the entire time he was in charge—about 10 of those years—earnestly looking for a "smart conservative" columnist. He failed. He kept hiring, then firing, David Horowitz instead. For a while there was an anonymous "Ask a Wingnut" column.

And this in a nutshell is bwhy mainstream media is failing to meet the moment. They are solving for “both sides” instead of truth. One “side” has gone completely off the rails with lies and propaganda Report that, otherwise you’re just enabling the slide into fascism.

Shades of JD Vance at the VP debate when he was fact checked. "“Margaret, the rules were that you weren’t going to fact check:". He didn't try to defend his lie, he complained that some standards of truth were being upheld. And the prevailing "wisdom" was that he "won" that debate. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Why would 'intellectual diversity' require lying? Newspapers should never publish 'Opinions" not based on fact. That's why I cancelled all newspapers.

Publishing liars and the factually challenged is just another flavor of DEI. What's truly conservative is conserving facts and the truth. Diversity of opinion should never require printing lies and half-baked analysis. The same problem is rife at the Wall Street Journal: substack.com/@ericbutterf...

Thiessen was a major reason I cancelled my longtime subscription to WaPo. And, I was a poli sci major (Grinnell undergrad), taught by my profs that WaPo had been one of the world's most respected newspapers.

I totally believe that! The Right Wing billionaire oligarchy is very rich, very strong, & basically soulless! POWER above ⬆️ ALL else! The buffoonish Trump is merely their puppet & useful IDIOT!

And so it continues. Mainstream media coddles right-wing journalists in the useless pursuit of fairness, distorting their ethics and morals to accept hypocrisy and amorality. It's time to stop. Report the truth. Let the right-wing snowflakes meltdown and ignore their faux tantrums.

If a columnist isn't good enough to pass a fact check he should not be published in a newspaper. Surely they could have found a few GOP people who could write a passable column if they had wanted to.

Every opinion piece should be fact-checked before publication. When I was in journalism, the places I worked (newspapers) always had The Desk (editors) who looked at everything that went in that day’s paper. Missing info is our greatest threat today. For instance, once our sports editor wrote:…1/

2/ As a preview of the upcoming weekend game, the LSU football team had not beaten Univ of GA for 30 yrs. Well that sounded amazing, except I told the sports editor that LSU had only played GA ONCE in that 30-yr period. His column made things look worse than they actually were for LSU.

At the Minnesota Strib last fall, pub refused to print Harris endorsement. Edit page alums wrote the editorial paper should have published. Sent it to the Strib, which refused to print it. Had difficulty placing it online because 501c3 outfits can't or won't publish endorsements.

That is so infuriating that I don't know how these editors can sleep at night. It does comport with my observation that the right is far more eager than the left to make actual arguments, but those arguments will all be based on factually incorrect assumptions.

Thank you for writing about this. I think this example represents two of the most important historical forces that will explain to future generations how American democracy failed itself: epistemic corruption, and "intellectual diversity" as affirmative action for the anti-democratic right.

I edited a small town paper and I would always ask “we’re just going to publish this” when our conservative writers turned in an opinion piece full of made-up bullshit. The response from on high was always “yep”

As a consumer, I feel they ought to have put a clear disclaimer or refused to print. Something like: "this piece was not factchecked, but we are including it to meet our goal of intellectual diversity."
