As a matter of disclosure the reporter here contacted me and asked to chat on background. I was on deadline and asked her to contact me later; there was no follow up. Which was fine. I would have had nothing material to add to this story. My experience of Neil was not any of this.

Apart from the podcasts and this article, is there an actual complaint? An ongoing lawsuit? Or are we talking about burning Gaiman's books just on the basis of allegations spread on the net? To think that he could be a horrible person or that he is actually a twisted offender are different things.

It's so sad and disheartening. He's a brilliant writer. Online, here and on Twitter, he was unfailingly approachable and kind to all of us who interacted with him. So difficult to reconcile, know how to respond. Like Whedon and Buffy.

So much this. I hate this. I had one interaction with Gaiman thirty years ago that was pleasant and friendly, and have spent the last 30 years thinking - and telling others - that he was a genuinely nice guy. I'm gutted to find out how wrong my first (and only) impression actually was.

I tend to be sceptic about the public personas of famous people, but in Gaiman's case I had reason to believe that he was genuinely a nice guy: a friend of mine met him at a wedding, with her having absolutely no clue of who he was -this was in Spain on the early 2000's and he wasn't mainstream...

famous here back then-, to the point that she didn't remember his full name afterwards and she still found him really nice and personable. So it seems that he was just very good at projecting that façade.

I've had perhaps a dozen interactions with him over the years, and he has always been wonderful towards me (remembering my name, even) and there was nothing in it for him except interacting with a fan. I would so have liked him to be genuinely a good person.

As chilling as it is, I think there's also an element of truly having kindness, respect, and empathy for people the abuser categorizes as "person," while the abuser has none of those things for anyone they categorize as "target."

You're a peer of Gaiman, not prey. He'd never show that predatory behavior to a peer. It works in humans just like the hunting styles of big cats. They see a vulnerable individual, cut them out of the herd, pull them down and strike. Human predators can convince prey that they're not victims.

You never, ever really know someone else. Human predators have to be under extreme stress before their "acceptableness" masks slip. It's what makes them successful predators.

I used to be part of a fansite back in the early 2000s - one of the guys there later became a budding writer, who was then ousted from that community as a manipulative, exploitative abuser. I didn't know him well, but I was quite shocked about this; there never seemed an indication he was like that.

The only time he hit on *me*, I was in the middle of sub-heading a convention and had zero free time. My response was something like, "You've got to be kidding." He politely accepted NO for an answer. We can chat some other time about my experiences of unwanted advances. Folks regret doing it.

You’re going to see a lot about “not all men”. Us “not all men” just have to be that much better. In word, thought, and deed. By listening. By believing. By supporting. It doesn’t make up for the “other men” but it helps

nothing in this one, but a linked article said that the show was originally renewed for a third season, but will now end with a single 90 min episode. gaiman contributed to the writing but won't be involved with production. no comments from anyone, at least in this article

My galley copy of Good Omens from my book store days is one of only three books that have traveled with me through numerous cross-country moves over 35 years. I'll have to wait until I'm in a better place mentally before I decide what to do with it.

I think this guy would have come out quite differently if he hadn't taken to hanging out with Bezos and, apparently, concluding that him wanting thing meant that he should have thing. No matter what. It is so hard for some people to come to terms with the idea that they can want and not have.

His behavior started long before he thought he and Bezos were pals, though. I blame scientology as a source of the problem, but that absolutely doesn't negate his responsibility as a grown man.

Palmer goes well beyond complicity. She was an active participant for years, as other victims have discussed. Amd she actively exploited people for free labor and helped establish the financial dependence even when she wasn't directly participating.

I met him for 30 seconds at a signing line at a local con. He was charming and friendly. He drew a funny/creepy face in a Sandman Trade as he signed it saying it was now a muich creepier book. It was hilarious and I laughed heartily. I don't think I can look at that book, now. Maybe much later.

I had given up on any further reporting. We had a quote of his on our bookstore wall that we painted over months ago. No one has noticed or commented. I'm glad I don't have to stare at it every day at work anymore.

I’m grateful for this article because he’s been on radio-silence since it broke. He can’t be allowed to wait this out and resurface later after everyone has forgotten and moved on. (At the same time, I’ve paused in the middle to finish it later because it’s awful to read.)

As a dull boring person who would never be able to write anything like Gaiman, it’s hard not to look at all his stories of abuse and manipulation as just reflecting his behavior not his imagination.

The last thing I remembering him doing was a Oct ‘23 live stream conversation with a rabbi who had written a book “On repentance and repair” which seemed really generous of him considering how large his platform was. Now feels like a verse in “Ironic”

I read it. It’s horrible. I interviewed him once, hung out with him at a film festival, and considered it a high point of my blogging career. And now I’m just horrified because I can absolutely see this darkness as plausible and was blind to it.

When an artist turns out to be this much of a scumbag, it has an area of effect. Everything they created becomes soiled by association. The list of things I will never read or watch again because of him is quite long.

This is the first I heard of this... and it's horrible for me in a particular way - I'm a huge Terry Pratchett fan, his gentle, humanist world view has greatly shaped my life. Now I know that he was friends with someone who was apparently a monster is hard to bear; even if it was (I assume) hidden.

Sir Terry was the only 'famous' individual for whom I've felt real sorrow when they passed - for the words that will never be written, for the loss to the world - and I don't want him tainted by association. But... For some reason I never have read any of Gaiman's works, I just bounced off them.

Someone in another reply said Meryl Streep didn't know about Weinstein because he needed her not to know. She was part of his cover. It seems plausible to me that the same is true here. Terry wouldn't have known because it was necessary to the illusion that he not.

Pratchett was long dead by the tine this happened. I mean, do read somebody else once in a while but you can't blame Pratchett for not knowing secrets or the future.

I don't... I just hope he never knew. Someone else said that Gaiman had a persona, and I've seen that in person... hopefully, terribly, that persona fooled and still fools everyone not involved - it's a hard thing to hope for, because of what it means. I hate all of this.

Pratchett carried a lot of anger about the injustices of this world, and gleefully (and beautifully!) skewered abusers big and small in his writing. I'm having a hard time believing that he would knowingly collaborate with one of them.

This one hurts more than some others. I think the lesson really has to be for me: People can surprise you. And disappoint you so hard. It doesn’t mean everyone is a scum bag (or one at all times). But you can’t ever know someone completely- especially if you only “know” a public version of them.

I had listened to the first four podcasts. Took them with a grain of salt. But even if you stripped it down to the stuff he admitted to (albeit saying it was consensual) it sounded at the very least extremely creepy. The article has some extra info; too much to stay on the fence about it.

Just a reminder that the people we admire, idolise, are inspired by etc are just people and subject to being deeply flawed, deceitful and just down right dastardly as any one of us might be or become.

If the statements about their son being present during violent sex acts are accurate, it is wrong to leave a child in unsupervised custody of either parent. They are dissemblers, incapable of arranging for proper, capable child care, or prioritizing their young boy.

I absolutely hate it when someone so talented and who has gifted us with storytelling turns out to be such a monster. It feels like such a betrayal, and guilt for enjoying his work. Very brave of her to tell her story, I hope she finds some peace.

I use to think that some artists had an ineffable, not sure that's the right word, quality that drove their art but God damn it's apparently just sexual deviancy for almost every cis male.

I'm definitely sadder about this than that other Brit with ongoing foot-in mouth. While I still want to read some of his work that I haven't gotten to yet, none of that will be acquired through new purchases.

I'm so sickened and disheartened by all of this, like all of us who found our way to John's post. The thing that I can't stop thinking about (that's absolutely making it worse) is that Neil is likely to become a darling of the "your body, my choice" crowd. I bet he finds a whole new fandom.

I heard other people talk about her being an “enabler” but based on this article she sounds way worse than just an enabler to me. She was literally sending women to him. She’s just as culpable in this, in my opinion.

She was also having sex with 20 year old fans when she was in her 30s. Both the age gap and the power imbalance are beyond creepy, and then just passing her on to her abusive husband? Unforgivable

And Scientology, yikes-a-rama! The cult stuff is so creepy and abusive. While reading the piece, the thought occurred to me that similar behaviors are likely going on in the Trump/Christofascist cult(s).

Re: Neil Gaiman It would seem he modeled a lot of his work on another author without ever giving her credit… Tanitha Lee Tales from Flat Earth heavily influenced Gaiman’s work. That said, have a look at her work if you want some similar fantasy content. sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/lee_ta...

Some folks are having a go at Wil Wheaton for not stepping up regarding sexual assault allegations of his “best friend”. It’s unfortunate that he was silent. Perhaps he was too close to the situation to objectively comment? That said, what he says in this post is still valid.

Scientist Mel@scientistmel.bsky.social

I get that. I think we should also consider that Gaiman has editors, copywriters, people who do the artwork, etc… It’s a large group of people who depend on the work to do well to put food on their table www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-ma...

When I met Gaiman and Amanda Palmer in 2013 at an event in Shoreditch-London, UK… He had artwork on display from artists who have worked on his books, graphic novels, etc… It is a collaboration for much of his work… to the point it’s incorporated into events he attends

I ask two questions in a case like this: Is the author receiving revenue from my enjoyment of their art, and does the author's behavior render the themes of their work inauthentic. I can read Conan stories, for instance, because Howard is dead, and he wasn't a hypocrite. Gaiman fails both tests.

Oh, that's a good framework. I've been thinking about how/whether to resist the posthumous use of people's art....for ex., is it wrong to wear Chanel bc Coco was a willing Nazi collaborator? Henry Ford/Ford autos? Eric Clapton, who has said massively racist things but done albums with Black artists?

I remember when it became known Wil's famous bff had lowkey been abusing his longtime girlfriend. The gf wrote an essay, he was temporarily suspended fr his job, and Wil—a loud feminist at the time—noped out of all commentary about the situation. I take all celebrity heroism w/a grain of salt.

Whatever you think of him, that doesn’t invalidate what he’s saying. People‘s feelings matter. I dare say we all have made some poor decisions in our time. Fortunately, for us, ours aren’t under a microscope.

Seriously, there are very few words that could rectify this situation - it's just too vast. I can only hope the ones who suffered find their peace again, and things like this happen more and more infrequently, until it's a distant sad memory.

I feel deeply for you and I'm not even a fan, yet. I saw your cat pictures and I wondered why you were struggling. As a person who's experienced what the article describes more than once, your response feels very real, human and also respectful. It's so hard to learn that your trust was misplaced.

When you consider other "power rapist" cases, it's very believable. A rich and powerful man convinces his ex-wife to hand him a naive young girl, who he gets tipsy and convinces to get naked for a private bath only for him to join her and force himself on her?

The only reason you don't find it believable is because you don't think it would ever happen to you. And it probably won't, because you aren't a naive young lesbian in the home of a celebrity, getting plied with alcohol.

Some writers write about their demons to exorcise them. Some just want to admire them. And you never really know which. Anyhow, my fellow men, I am very tired of us.

“BDSM [has] a set of long-standing norms, the most important of which is that all parties must eagerly and clearly consent. [This] is the defining line that separates BDSM from abuse. And it was a line that Gaiman, according to the women, did not respect” Without consent its not kinky. It is rape.

BDSM "norms" is wishful thinking that some in the BDSM community bring up every time something like this happens. I worked across the street from a nightclub with a BDSM community, and they picked up teenage runaways from the greyhound station to abuse. Age of consent is 16 in many states.

I want to say - I have friends saying 'Don't meet your heroes.' because of this. I'm glad I get to say 'I met my hero, and he's still awesome.' Thank you for being authentic and not a horrible person. I'm sorry for the loss of a friend for you, I can't even imagine how that betrayal feels.

It sucks to find out the people you admire on the basis of their art are monsters in their private lives. I imagine it’s significantly worse when you know them personally and they’ve kept that hidden from you. I still like Gaiman’s books, but he’s a piece of shit. Just fuck.

I recently took all my Gaiman books off my shelf, including giant leatherbound editions of Absolute Sandman, and dumped them in a pile in my basement with all the other garbage I need to haul away.

It's probably just me being too old, but it really bothers me when these kinds of incredibly sensitive situations exist only and are completely managed by the media. There are no police investigations or lawsuits or trials, no established procedures to rely on-

The media are the source, the media are the channel and it all gets thrown to the public in whatever way and time suits them, like some silly tabloid scandal splashed on page 3-

And I understand that it may not seem like this at the moment, but in the long run it means making victims more vulnerable, making the issue more subject to the whim of public opinion and shifting attention from what matters to the thrill of scandal and sordid details

Once you've been victimized this way, and look back thinking "what did I miss to stop me from avoiding this" you realize that all you did was open your heart to the wrong person. You stop that and move on.

Sometimes you do. But often you ask yourself what you did to bring that on yourself, and you spend a long time - sometimes the rest of your life - never being able to give someone your trust.

Yeah 😞 I’ve stopped following AFP for a while now and was always torn between admiration and thinking she must mislead many people into a belief of friendship that have to be let down at some point. I have great memories connected to her music gigs. But this is hard to stomach. Hard to excuse.

This - AND - we need to stop acting like women have the responsibility to control men's behavior It was irresponsible at best, enabling at worst of her to introduce women to a man she at least strongly suspected would manipulate/harm them Worth noting AFP divorced Gaimen so not exactly her husband

Lyrics from the article say a lot about Palmer: “Another suicidal mass landing on my doorstep — thanks a ton / A few more corpses in the sack / You’ll get away with it; it’s just the same old script" Referring to women as suicidal mass along with the word another objectifies them & centers her

Several of his works meant so much to me that I have them in multiple formats or own multiple paper copies. From reading the comments, I don't think I have the spoons to read the article. I heard the allegations when they first broke, but I can't deal with the details right now.

Gaiman has been one of my literary heroes since Sandman and his Good Omens collaboration with Terry Pratchett (another, thankfully unsullied, hero). I can't say how much this sickens me and how distraught I am for his victims. Particularly saddening after Whedon (although this is even worse, IMHO).

Indeed. This one hurts more than others though. We met him at signings in the early 2000s; our kids grew up with the books. Our baby was at the Wolves .. event in London; at 21 now she cherishes the book signed to her. How to separate the feelings about the revelations from the collection/memories?

Why do all the people who I think are empathetic, and a great writer of women, and a defender of women like Whedon and Gaiman) turn out to be monsters?

It's important to note that there should be a massive neon trigger warning on this one. That was an extremely awful read. It's fucked. People should be careful, and if you already read the Rolling Stones article that came out in Aug and believe these women, you may not need to read this.

I started reading it a few minutes ago and my internet connection went out for a minute and I’m glad it did. I’m not going back to read the rest. It almost made me sick. His work meant so much to me and he seemed, from what I knew until this past year, to be a good person. I’m furious and disgusted

You know why it never surprised me? He was supposed to be a comedian, but he wasn't EVEN SLIGHTLY FUNNY. He wasn't the least bit funny, yet he'd wormed his way into a position of influence, in the entertainment industry. That means he was good at manipulating people & probably lacked a conscience.

I mean, maybe Boomers genuinely found him funny. I dunno. They ARE the fucking Lead Poisoning Generation, after all. They probably do genuinely respond well to the "I'm making a funny face and funny noises" genre of comedy.

Don't meet your heroes. Sometimes they're terrible people. I'm glad I read so much of Gaiman's work previously, because I'd have a hard time reading it again. Even though Wil Wheaton had a good point that lots of people other than Gaiman were involved with Sandman and the movies/TV shows.

You are not alone. I have known him for half a too-long lifetime and have had *many* female friends in common with him, many of whom dated him, and I never heard a whisper of anything like this, and now I'm in a state of shock. I wish I had some reason not to believe it.

💔💔💔 Those poor women. For ppl who argue that one can sep art & artist - purchasing the art that directly funds the artist is where the problem lies. I cannot, I good conscience, spend my money to provide tacit support of an individual that is accused or guilty of SA

It's really telling that this was all about power and control and not about sex. Women were throwing themselves at him, but that wasn't enough. He has to assault vulnerable women to get off.

I had heard of it because of the podcast and was already disgusted. Having it all laid out like this is just... disgusting. It's the kind of thing that makes me second-guess tattoos: "what if I later find out that the author/company was a fucking abuser?"

Yeah, but her inaction, her evasion of paying the victim her wages (and her career of being famous but asking for free labor as an artist), and stringing along with airy offers os "support" end up making her sound like she was a Gislaine to his Epstein, procuring victims and playing awful games.

I'm still digesting a lot of it. One particular bit that *did* stand out was the described change in attitude when she found out their son was in the same room, *without headphones*, while an incident occurred. Before that, as described, Palmer was "sigh, ANOTHER one," but *then* it was bad.
