An essential development over the past decade-plus is that the ignorant went from feeling chastened when their ignorance was revealed to banding together and deciding that, actually, they were right. They might disagree at times, but they agreed that ignorance itself was an indicator of trust.

.. they are consuming different sources of information than you. Remember that fact, internalize it, and use it. They have not sat down, watched CNN for 6 hours, and then said "I like the fascism and grift! He's my guy!" They watched Fox, where he's simply not a fascist or a grifter.

Americans continue to benefit from rape of resources from Africa, often the result of having overthrown elected governments in the region. Climate change, caused by rich countries, hurts poor countries more than the perpetrators. The tax system should be altered so that rich Americans pay the price.

"Left wing billionaires" is an oxymoron. The overwhelming majority of billionaires are sociopathic right-wingers. That's why the right-wing attacks Soros so much, because he's one of the very few who actually contribute to Democrats and progressive causes, and they want to stop that.

"Anyone who believes this obviously true thing is true, so freaking obvious it might as well be "2+2=4" or "grass is green", is too stupid to function" is gaslighting to a degree never attempted before. These people are mentally ill. Brains utterly broken.

Scott Adams. Another sad excuse for a celebrity in Trump world. He is the textbook example of someone who has found a way to revel in his moral failings by being a cult cheerleader.

This gives me an idea actually: What if we called the billionaire's tax a 10% to tithe that will help the community? I bet you $100 there will be conservatives excited about the idea even though it's literally just a rebranding of taxes.

The disgusting framing of where the money is going aside, the point of taxing people is precisely because we need people to contribute money they otherwise wouldn’t feel compelled to. Even “left wing billionaires” are selfish and will hoard lots of money so the state forces them to spend it!

It really does give away the whole game that he couldn’t resist the “funding Africa’s population growth” line, though. It used to just be about cutting unnecessary spending, now they talk about aid programs with such racist vitriol.

Isn’t Scott adams dying or something? I guess he’s making good use of his last days by sharing racist and moronic tweets from one of the most odious “personalities” of this cursed era. So many names I don’t want to see again ever, unless it is in the context of a tour in which they beg forgiveness.

That's actually a hugely revealing slip, suggesting that reversing the relative decline of the white population was a motive for the USAID cuts.

Right. A traditional, isolationist conservative could make an argument that it’s not the US taxpayer’s job to pay for aid programs in Africa, but that’s not what he’s saying.

Anyone believing that Jews were killed in concentration camps is too stupid to function. If it were true why didn’t the Jews from the other countries join together to kill all the Nazis? That’s how stupid Cernovich sounds.

Dickless there doesn't bother to think that the United States established and funded USAID because we believed that it served American interests at least as well as it served those of the nations to which we sent help.

USAID wasn't just "feel good about feeding starving kids" It was that 1st scene from The Godfather. It's how all of a sudden we had special forces and armed drone air strips in places so remote they didn't even have names. Just grid coordinates. USAID bought us cooperation.

sure sign of "just throw money at it" brain in action USAID wasn't just a funding source, but an organization. they fired the aid workers, sent home the logisticians, burned supplies that had already been paid for.

Even if we restored the funding for these programs tomorrow the number of preventable deaths from USAID cuts will almost certainly be in the millions if it isn't there already. This is going to be our generation's version of German civilians denying the reality of the holocaust in the late 1940s.

Though if you boil this thought down to "why don't billionaires pay a fair amount to support social services?", you can find a nut of insight there that's just barely eluding their grasp (not that these particular people are intellectually honest).

1. “Funding population growth” is now the same as “preventing death and suffering”? 2. The “left wing” billionaire most famously filling the shortfall? These guys accused him of putting microchips in vaccines. 3. These are the same guys that burned $10M of contraceptives, right?

Knowledge is power & with a lack of access to that form of power (capital) People seek power where they have easy access to it. maga used "own the algorithms" to "own the Libs" & essentially manipulate & abuse vulnerable adults, while their actions hide behind powerful I.P. addresses & Congress=lame

Ignorance is a tribal sorting mechanism. If you are willing to accept and recite a shared mythology no matter how at odds it may be with reality, you have shown yourself to be a committed partisan. You can be trusted—not to faithfully recite facts but to toe the line.

It's been a problem forever: the problem of "commonsense." What most people believe is called "commonsensical." But if it's based on prejudices rather than broad-based research, it's wrong and dangerous. "Spare the rod and spoil the child" gave every vicious adult license to assault kids.

Few decades-plus. Started when Reagan and his minions courted the then-silent majority Jesus freaks. They are now loud, proud, and entitled. Still fcking vacuous idiots into which the monied class has poured their "bootstraps" theology - but silent no more.

The Trump effect. Make a club (maga), invite really dumb, mean people and tell them they're the ones who are right. Tell them to lash out publicly at everyone else. Even support them doing it (j6). Maga is dying & this behavior won't be tolerated. Educate yourself. Be kind, respectful and truthful

Well, Mr. Republican, since I'm a citizen of a liberal country (Canada) where the educational standard is higher than in your country, I think what you are missing is that conservative governments underfund the public education system. That has produced the dire education results in the US.

A bit harsh & narrow, but correct. For whatever reason people are unhappy about their place in the world. Society says “the cream rises”. So if you aren’t “successful” either you aren’t quality or someone did it to you. Trump tells them the latter, that nothing’s their fault. They like that.

"Creme rises" unintended symbolism. James Bowman aka JD Vance comes out and tells his audience of white people that they don't have to apologize for being white anymore. The entire anti-DEI nonsense is nothing short of a "justification" for white people to remain in control of as much as possible.

Not sure what show made the point (Babylon Berlin possibly) - but to answer the question of what was wrong in the world the Commies had a bookcase full of books, but the fascists only needed one (Mein Kampf).

This is a key component of how epistemic capture and disinformation works... The disinformation agents placate the morons and builds a trusted in group, where only the in group can see the truth behind conspiracy... The in group now feels superior and self reinforces ignorance with shared disinfo

On the nose!!!! This is a trend that has been bubbling below the surface, lo these many years, just waiting for the perfect storm when fascism, racism, anti-intellectualism and social media all all came together and allowed it to erupt fully-formed.

You’re correct, but also this is the political project of the Washington Post (among many other entities that you didn’t work for, of course). Don’t you think Bezos benefits from ignorant scattered workers that can’t collectivize behind an ideologically coherent political project?

You also have to factor in their ability to be/become the victim in any circumstance. Somehow they convince themselves they've been wronged by the powers that be rather than they're not seeking new information in any respect. Information is to be brought to them, not sought out

They revel in their own ignorance to the point where they can barely function in the real world, but they do enough to be worse than just a nuisance because they disrupt everything with their loud and obnoxious behavior.

As soon as the phrase "alternative facts" came to be used without everyone just absolutely castigating anyone stupid enough to utter such nonsense, that was the death knell.

You have absolutely nailed it. It was hastened by the glorification of being stupid. They used to know their place and let knowledgeable and educated people lead important & essential foundations of society. The takeover of the ignorant has produced rule by organized crime

In my dystopian fantasy/nightmares, I sometimes envision a world in which health insurance premiums are calculated based on intelligence and education, since smarter & more educated people are more likely to avoid unnecessary risk. I would just like to see how MAGA would handle that

The democratic hypothesis in its extreme & popular form is all men are equal & I am just as good as you. It is so untrue that an elaborate system of humbug was invented in order to render it credible to any normally sane human being. Nowhere has this system of humbug been perfected as in America.

This isn't just the past decade or so. It's been with us since day one. Nixon's Southern Strategy and Reagan getting into bed with Falwell and Robertson just kicked it into high gear.

Or as I like to say to religious zealots: "You do understand that they call it "faith" for a reason, right? It's because you can't PROVE it with concrete evidence and choose to believe it anyway. It's fine to have religious faith, but because it's unprovable, you can't force others to live by it."

Or to put it in other terms, they unanimously agree that consensus among experts is proof of a conspiracy against them. They may disagree on what the "right" answer is, but they know that anything told to them by people who have formally studied an issue *must* be a hoax.

They feel wronged somehow and their ignorance leads them to believe the angry voices they hear. Preachers. Murdoch news. Saying the same things. There is a lot of alcohol and testosterone involved too.

Their leader cut the Dept of Education, spammed America with misinformation, caused them to not vaccinate for measles, covid, hepatitis-Raised the cost of everything including food & health insurance, slashed jobs, slashed food assistance to the poor Chips-Snap-& they are happier than flies on S#it.

"I love the uneducated," said Trump. He means it. The ruling class keeps the masses stupid so that when they are told that it is immigrants, or non-whites, or non-Christians or whomever that is keeping them poor, they don't figure out the obvious: it's the ruling class who are keeping them poor.

Well put. Anti-intellectualism has been part of American life since the beginning, but the Internet magnified its influence to what is has now become. They couldn’t band together before, but now they’re loud and proud.

A phenomenon initially limited by the speed of crackpot blogs and "Send This to Everyone You Know!" chain emails from AOL accounts until Mark Zuckerberg accelerated it orders of magnitude by repurposing a college cyber-stalking took to disrupt, accelerate and monetize the pseudo-information economy.

the larger problem has been the people who assumed they already knew everything and had nothing left to learn until social media turned up and contradicted them and they got very angry about that

Ignorance is valued now as intelligence and education were during the JFK era. The idiocy has become the ruling class, at least for the time being.

It started with Bush. Republican voters I spoke to said they thought Gore was too smart. Also, "Gore thinks he's smarter than me.". I'd like a president who is much smarter than me which is why I voted for Hillary and Kamala.

This is absolutely right - and it was accomplished by the vilification of all forms of expertise and information collected outside the far right fringe-o-sphere. Once the official sources are discredited you can put anything in your information ecosystem.

"...the worst kind of one party state..invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty." Hannah Arendt 100%

Time to Reread The Dead Zone by Stephen King. "The unlettered of America are dinosaurs lumbering down a blind alley". The last part about the clown politician no one took seriously enough with his circus of hate /entertainment was a glimpse of NOW written in 1979

You're describing the Dunning-Kruger effect, where low-ability people overestimate their level of ability. The GOP relies on this phenomenon & encourages it by pandering to the ignorant & gullible. Without the support of their gullible base, there would BE no GOP.

In A CANTICLE FOR LEBOWITZ after the nuclear war happened, the majority of humanity's survivors went on a massacre of everyone who was a scientist and scholar until they started on everyone who could read. They took "simpleton" as a badge of honor and that was written in the 1950s.

Man, this is the crux of all of it. Real expertise is now worthless. People who used to feel a cultural imperative to defer to those who actually know better now “do their own research” and actually “know better” themselves.

This is a development that some saw coming. There used to be a media/social media ritual where someone offensively ignorant was shamed for their lies - and the liberal centrists congratulated themselves on a victory. But the ignorant people just ended up being rewarded for the attention. 1/2

An early example of this was Jon Stewart's humbling od Tucker Carlson on Crossfire - to much applause. But what's happened since then? Carlson has just edged towards worse and worse audiences, and in turn used those audiences to platform and then mainstream terrible ideas. 2/2

If I had a dollar for every time a person had countered my challenge to their stated beliefs/opinions with, "All I know is ... "(fill in with something "factual" they had gleaned from Fox News or another not-quite-fully informed person), I'd have a lot of dollars.

Yes but let's look at why the growth of ignorance in the US has outpaced the growth of ignorance in Europe or Canada. It's because the US has chosen to vastly cut its spending on public education. That's done violence to children's ability to master the skills needed to get beyond ignorance.

I think we really screwed ourselves as a country when we really went all in promoting the idea of “everyone is entitled to their opinion.” I feel like too many people heard that, and thought that it meant “nothing I ever say or do can be wrong.“

Social media escalated the weaknesses made by critical thinking and education decline. It made it easier to find your people and the algorithms amplified the feedback loops of stupid.

This goes back...well, farther than this...but it reminds of how Geo. W. Bush bragged that he "went with his gut" in making decisions. And how Sarah Palin cited as "common sense" every stupid idea she put forth. Use common sense and you'd think the earth is flat and the sun moves around it.

It’s always been about racism and ignorance to keep white people hating minorities, and government and business policies to punish minorities. If you keep whites focused on hating immigrants, they won’t notice all the programs you cut, the wage declines.

Curious example. Your AI summary is basically correct. The "Know Nothing Party" was called that by outsiders (not its members) because members refused to talk about their party/secret society, not because they were proudly ignorant. They deserved the nickname, but they didn't revel in it.

anti-vaccine followers count on this; they prey on everyone’s lack of knowledge. They want to convince you that malevolent scientific forces are to blame for all health problems. They know that the desire to

A couple of things went on; those who never bothered to vote in the first place and the poorly educated were fused together via man's best ever fake news invention, the internet, into a seething mass of stupidity where they were told vaccines are poison and scientists are crooks out to fleece you.

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States... The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” ― Isaac Asimov

Nope. People like Rogan told really stupid people they are really the smart ones & let them in on a bunch of secrets, about vaccines, elections and groups of people. They expose conspiracies and give them "evidence" to spout & half the time they don't even know what it means. It's the influencers
