this seems like so obviously a terrible thing for Rs to tie themselves to i have to wonder what's up

Trump: "Ramaswamy put up a very powerful Ad about a mother saying that her daughter, Acton, is a liar, and much worse. The Press is trying to get him to 'take down the Ad.' Frankly, anybody whose mother spoke about daughter that way would normally lead to the daughter being precluded from serving"

The NYT editorial page has convinced them that the "my kids cut me off and it's not my fault, it's theirs" demographic is much larger and more influential than it is.

The mods of /r/conservative are removing any posts that even mentions the ad. If those chuds can see how toxic this brand is for Rs, I can't comprehend how the pols don't

It's reminding me of the Access Hollywood tape - like WE all see it's awful but somehow maybe there's a chunk of people who are responding to it, or aren't actively repulsed by it?

He thought Epstein was evil because he "stole the help." I don't think he understands how normal people feel.

Children lying about getting raped is an idea that undergirds their entire existence and their ability to stay free and unaccountable. Defending the idea that children lie about adults raping them is the whole ball game.

I honestly still haven't been able to bring myself to believe Ohio wil make the right choice, as someone whon grew up there most of my life. Maybe they're just betting the OH electorate think it's good and cool. Maybe they turn out to be right.

I think they instinctively side with the person holding the higher place in any hierarchy - sometimes described as right-wing authoritarianism. Dr. Acton is the daughter, so her mother must be right, no matter the evidence to the contrary. They don’t get that other people don’t think like that.

My take is everything is about building a firewall (shifting the Overton window). They will always side with someone who says the victim is a liar because it pulls us away from their own misdeeds (see Epstein). Same with guns. If I argue we should be able to own RPGs we don’t discuss assault rifles

i forget who suggested this first, but you really can't rule out that they've made a big polymarket bet against themselves and now desperately want to lose. lol

They also saw Access Hollywood tape and rape trials do nothing to hurt Trump, so seem to be testing to see how many rings removed that political immunity goes.

I feel like society has reached a saturation point of willful ignorance though. Cornell is fresh in everyone's minds. If there a tipping point for ignoring and tolerating "locker room talk" I think it's close.

Perhaps it’s some kind of Hail Mary for them. If they can make the race inconceivably cruel to the candidate, maybe, just maybe, the candidate will just quit.

I think the answer is that they're legitimately incredibly stupid and we just haven't fully seen how stupid they are. A lot of people seem to have a mental model of politics that doesn't allow them to believe that people with intelligence that low can get that far and I think that's wrong.

This is how Those People are going to counter the Epstein Files release: DARVO. They will use “oppo” on the victims in ways that will make this seem quaint and docile. Victim crushing, not victim blaming. We have not reached the depths of their depravity.

Absolutely not the important thing here, but reading him say '"Artificial" News' instead of his usual "Fake News" makes me wonder if the "artificial" in "artificial intelligence" reads as "fake" in his head, so that's why he's all in on "SI".

It's actually baffling. The only thing I can come up with is that they have literally run out of incompetent quisling bootlickers and so have to try to preserve the ones they have left. Supply and demand.

Have to keep in mind that we have no real idea what Trump’s information environment is, other than that it’s *really fucking weird*, and certainly skewed by Natalie. How aware is he of the actual reactions to the ad? How aware is he of the actual content? Also too, he’s a malignant piece of shit.

It may be too simplistic of an explanation but this is very much a party of, for, and by abusers. And they need a hail mary in the race so they may figure this gets them the attention they want and they can bang pots and pans together to distract from what the supposed "lies" were about.

Fits the shape of the 'progressives are ungrateful children' that they're attracted to like catnip. Clearly many of the MAGA crowd are comfortable with treating claims about the politicians they like with a criticality that would be be described as 'wish fulfillment.'

I mean, this just seems like a slightly removed version of siding with the abuser and not believing the victim. If there’s anything surprising about it, it’s that they think it’s removed enough to say it without repercussions.

I think it’s because most people literally cannot believe that any human would be so evil and rotten as to lie about child rape so they because they reject that hypothesis all that remains “well I guess there’s something suspicious about the candidate”

A CORE belief of conservatism is that children are an extension of the parent, thus property. This of course leads to tons of sex abuse. It also leaves the adults with a deep sense of shame, which they think everyone else is subjected to. See also: purity balls, and teenagers ‘pledging’ to Dad.

It really does. I can’t think my way to a scenario where this actually helps, though. I think it may just be yet another case where he can’t accept taking any L, even secondhand, and nobody can tell him no.

It's not applied consistently, but Trump has done this from time to time - Like stuck with Roy Moore after his child rape allegations (!!!) Also feels like the apocalypse that Republicans obviously feel like they're heading to is making them more desperate to hold onto *anything*.

I gotta admit I’m a little gobsmacked at his notion that “well, normally if your MOM comes out and says you suck, that’s it for you electorally speaking.“ Like, what’s he talking about? Has this happened a lot?

Yeah we're a couple days in and I'm surprised that they haven't started on "Oh, when Hegseth's mom says he's evil, it's disqualifying; but when Acton's evil mom say she's bad, it isn't? WHICH IS IT, LIBS? CHECKMATE?!?!?!?!"

And we'll see how much the press challenges him and Vance on their support for child abusers, and how much the Democrats advertise "Remember the party that claimed they were against pedophiles? This is what they really believe" just to annoy the Q-Anons.

Vance complained about Republicans who were “whining” about the ad, so the front isn’t particularly united. They are counting on their base to be outraged and turn out?

My theory is that Vance came out loudly in defense of the ad because he's the one who pushed Ramaswamy to produce it in the first place. Now they have a tiger by the tail.

Trump clearly has no trouble with actual pedophilia, or actual rape as long as the bros doing it are congenial to him and/or he can profit. (And, of course, his own actions and inclinations are to exploit women including underage girls, even if he's not into the pre-pubescent set).

For Trump and the Republicans, there are certain bad-sounding words that they avoid and get shocked over, even though the underlying behavior is fine for them.

I wonder if they think this will play like the Kavanaugh support that came out after his accusations. But this is reverse uno, on a 12 year old victim, and a mother who is not a good character witness after choosing her husband over the safety of her children. I don’t think it’s going to work.

I think it's just that Trump and Vivek are both the type who inherently see any sort of victim as deserving of their fate, even if the victim was a 12-year-old.

They're both Evil. They think everyone else is playing around and just pretending to have any sort of moral aversions. They truly struggle to believe anyone actually feels or thinks differently than their baseline mindset, which is again, Evil.

my pet theory is that they're literally trying to trigger PTSD symptoms or otherwise psychologically torment her, in the hopes that she makes some sort of gaffe or has a crash out. I think vivek's team is that craven

Guessing his internals are so bad the campaign's decided eating shit in public is a play they have to make (hail mary on Ohio sexism). Also, like he's got a couple B, so don't need a job after. He can and will pay someone to wipe the shit off his mouth after this.

I think they know they’re going to lose, so they‘re doing this undermine her first term out of the gate. the fact that they are getting spite b*ners from it is just a bonus.

When you have betrayed your oath, enabled and likely engaged in corruption, put all your chips on depravity, and if he goes down you’ve got nothing left as a party—and, hell, you might need a pardon—might as well side with another vile opportunist who is lying about a survivor of childhood rape.

My model of Trump at this point is that he’s completely given up on the midterms, and his main concern is ensuring that a Trumpist wins the 2028 R presidential nom, which past a certain point might actually be easier the worse things get for Rs.

Torpedoing the Republican Party in Ohio is fine (what have they done for Trump lately) but admitting that Trumpist gutter campaigning on psychosexual neurosis and familial trauma is not a good idea is not.

The GOP is built on hierarchy. Mother is above Daughter. Therefore this ad is powerful and a takedown of Acton. Ridiculous. But this is how a bunch of them think.

That's fair but at the same time, too many of his friends are pedophiles or adult sexual assaulters, and he himself is a rapist, so i have no problem believing he really thinks raping your (step)child is fine. Do wonder who typed this one though bc anyone with political instincts would have said no

At one of my first jobs I had a co-worker who was so shockingly bad at office politics that I assumed he had some angle I just wasn't seeing. Took me more than a year to accept that, nope, he just had even less idea than I did how to get other people to agree with him.

Pretty easy tri-answer tbh • desperate times, desperate measures • who in their ecosystem will say don't do this? • attacking women for *[insert grievance here]* has worked pretty damn well for Rs the last fifty years, why stop now

trump is trying to make Vivek into a victim of the Horrible Unfair press trump specializes in evasion of responsibility and presents himself every day as simultaneously king of kings and the True Victim, and he's trying to extend that via a transitive property it's unlikely to work for Ohio Rs

i know it’s an old and overused adage but what we’re seeing is the inmates running the asylum saying it’s bad is why they’re digging in. oppositional defiance is one of their deepest core “principles”

The whole thing reads like a parody although it’s real. What jumps out to me is called DeWine “disloyal”. That’s basically it, he’s just upset at anyone going against him or breaking rank. He’s appealing to others who see loyalty and obedience as the highest value. That why CSA is about power.

ramaswamy was part of DOGE early on and he knows that they were going to steal every American taxpayer’s information from the IRS. Of course he would hold that over the republicans.
