Baby queers with unsupportive families in small towns should know that they can grow up to be whatever they want to be, whether thatโ€™s a gender-abolitionist queer theory professor or a boring suburbanite with a middle management job at a Fortune 100 company.

When I wanted to continue teaching at niche aerospace university and they wanted to hire me to continue teaching, I said I wanted domestic partner benefits. I had to write the fuckin policy for them, modeled and cribbed from the University of Miami's at the time, . . .

But I used the fact that Boeing and Lockheed Martin (and Raytheon and the rest) had supportive LGBTQ+ policies, employee resource groups, etc., as did American, Delta, United on the aviation side. So, was able to leverage workplace practices of "bad" corporations as model for a better university

I worked for a โ€œlarge and bigger competitor of LMTโ€. Had someone transition on my team. The level of acceptance and support was astonishing and unexpected, from her teammates, to colleagues across sites, to HR and company leadership. Early 2000s.

Genuinely the Lockheed Martin pride socks are incredible and I want a pair. Also, they represent the only stable progressiveness available to the US with the constitution as it is.

Y'know you say that, but I've seen enough "RAAAH NATO IS NON-NEGOTIABLE" types that I could believe it.

NATO being this force for trans liberation is... certainly something. It's not and many NATO members treat trans people atrociously, but it's certainly "a take"

Wow itโ€™s actually SO fucked up that this huge government contractor that is a major employer where I grew up is publicly embracing LGBT social and civil equality. Queer people would be MUCH better off if they were extremely homophobic and the only jobs available to us were at lefty nonprofits.

yeah bro thats exactly right. trans and gay people deserve to make weapons of genocide for profligate megacorps too, and to have their symbols of liberation put on kitschy merch sold by the self-same companies

Yes, of course McDonaldโ€™s posting about National Coming Out Day is โ€œperformative.โ€ Nobody thinks Ronald McDonald threw the first brick at Stonewall. Nonetheless, the biggest and most influential institutions in American life performing affirmation of LGBT social and civil equality is a good thing.

For the last ten years, every leftist has talked about the democratic party "bending the knee" to them. Putting aside whether quoting film GOT is cringe, it's probably more useful to have McDonalds, Target, and Disney bending the knee

This kinda gets to something that I've been thinking lately. That we need to stop expecting politicians, or in this case corporations, as moral monoliths, and more as things that can be changed. With effort changed in the way we want them to be. Expectation in a way kills effort.

Taking the win of corporations feeling the weather and trimming sails to point towards equality is good. Don't trust them! And definitely don't forgive Target. But the more noise we make about them being on our side, the harder for them to back away it is, do celebrate the win.

And then next week they'll donate a few million to some anti-queer rights group. Why the fuck should I pat them on the back for doing half-assed PR trying to market to me while also funding my genocide? I'm sorry but if this impresses you, you'd be impressed by jangling keys.

I want to live in a world where society has moved in a direction such that our biggest corporations feel an obligation to support our most marginalized populations. because it's not a sign that corporations are 'good'. it's a sign that society writ-large is trying to be.

This is what always annoyed me about moaning about rainbow capitalism. Yes obviously corporations are amoral and only care about money. But theyโ€™re really good at only caring about money so if they think society is more likely to reward them for acting supportive, thatโ€™s a good sign!

Yes itโ€™s a good weathervane for social acceptance, and it also helps move society toward more acceptance. Positive feedback. Same reason why representation in media is so important

it also produces big backlash tho. like, obviously it's good when rainbows are everywhere and every tv series has queer characters but it bothers many, many people to such degree that they 'rebel' by being anti-woke and purposefully going the other way. hence, where we are today. rinse and repeat.

People getting mad about "rainbow capitalism" implies that the only acceptable way for corporations to support non-cishet white people is quietly and out of public view. You can't make people feel safe and welcome with your thoughts; it needs to be expressed, "out loud", as it were.

Iโ€™d rather work for the soul sucking corporation that at least acknowledges pride or protects LGBTQ workers (not saying McDonaldโ€™s does I have zero knowledge of the policies) than the corporations that refuse to.

No one on the LGBT+ side of things thinks that getting a single tweet from McDonald's about NCOD is the be all end all of fighting for our rights. I don't know why anyone pretends that it is. Of course there are more battles to fight! But at least corps think our money is good again. Take the W.

โ€œI donโ€™t really care what is in peopleโ€™s hearts. I care about what they say and what they doโ€ This is privileged ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ’ฉ. Is this working out NOW? CERTAIN people โ€œsay and doโ€ things contrary to whats in their โ€œheartsโ€ until their base nature becomes acceptable/profitable AGAIN. Hate has a long memory.

It means you're about as mainstream and accepted as you can get if massive, highly risk averse corporations are willing to come out in support. Who cares if it's disingenuous? They're corporations. They're inherently amoral. Their whole purpose is to dilute moral and legal culpability of the owners.

At worst, the performance is a barometer for public opinion. They anticipate it being more profitable to put on this costume than the other one. That may not be the same thing as them earnestly throwing their full weight behind the cause, but it still helps to know that they see those signs.

Itโ€™s been a couple hours and Iโ€™m still laughing at โ€œNobody thinks Ronald McDonald threw the first brick at Stonewall,โ€ thank you ๐Ÿ˜‚โญ๏ธ

Performative tolerance doesn't matter at all when the same company is in fact financially supporting multitudes of homophobic and transphobic Republican candidates and politicians. At least $100,000 in this year alone. Boycott McD's

Virtue signalling > Vice signalling. And a a customer, I don't care if you (business) *like* me, but I'm more inclined to shop at your establishment if you have a rainbow (or trans) flag somewhere -if nothing else, because i'm less likely to encounter open bigots while i'm there!

Some people just couldn't imagine things could become worse ever again, and that was a tragic failure of their imagination. They started taking everything for granted and always complaining how inadequate it was instead of thinking how to make it last. bsky.app/profile/opin...

IMO many of the things that people disliked about โ€˜wokeโ€™ first time around will basically self-correct, because most of them arose from a kind of political ZIRP where folks thought this was the most racist society would ever be, so no reason to not push as hard as possible on literally everything

It is such a Christian/Western idea to be concerned with the inner beliefs of the actors. I took an eastern religions class in college (Jesuit) and it was a striking realization that a key distinction was about the emphasis on belief (doxis) v. action (praxis).

I donโ€™t really care what is in peopleโ€™s hearts. I care about what they say and what they do. I want to make homophobia and transphobia so shameful and taboo that bigots dare not express or act on it for fear of dire social and professional consequences.

I want my enemies to live in fear that the public will discover their true, hideous feelings about me and mine, and that the revelation will destroy them. I want their bigotry to be a shameful aberration they must hide and indulge only in secret if at all. "Mask On" forever...

Itโ€™s possible to reconstruct a bigot but itโ€™s intensive, Iโ€™d rather just prevent them from retransmitting the disease and set up a social cordon sanitaire. The effort of fixing one person is rarely proportional to the gain.

They don't perform it if it isn't worth it for them. It's a social signifier - shit isn't as fucked or as hopeless as the shouters want us to believe. Just as these corps go quiet in other years, them doing it again is a good sign. The boats are rising again.

I have a distinct memory of a young queer woman telling me that, silly as it was, "I Kissed A GIrl" was her first exposure to the idea that was something a female person could do, and so she could never bad-mouth it.

Holy shit, Max. This is A BAR. I need to sit down. For real, Iโ€™m literally reconsidering how Iโ€™ve always thought about this. Iโ€™ve always thought that if I couldnโ€™t perfectly represent my beliefs/morals/principles, then I shouldnโ€™t be publicly vocal about them. I donโ€™t want to be a hypocrite.

I'd rather have people fail to live up to my principles, which are higher than me, than fail to live up to me. Getting those principles across, Signaling that Virtue, serves that purpose.

The sentence "Ronald McDonald threw the first pie at Stonewall" popped into my head unbidden but it's giving me a heckuva chuckle. Then I realized that in '69 they were probably making those molten hot fried apple pies and that is legit a weapon.

Not only is it a litmus test for public support for LGBT rights in the best of times, it is also an indication that public support is so strong that soulless corps would rather pander to civil rights than pander to Trump and his authoritarian government. That's a big deal.

One thing the Russian invasion of Ukraine has radicalized me on is no longer tolerating people treating weapons manufacturers as uniquely and intrinsically evil. Defending freedom requires weapons.

I was about to crap on the stupid socks but you did make a point worth considering. unfortunately the bombs and bomb makers have no morals, so when their use happens to coincide with what you consider a worthy purpose, it's a broken clock situation at best.

I see them a lot like oil companies. They engage in a lot of horrific acts but also are integral to the operation of many good things in our society. It's reckless to just want to destroy them. Instead, we need to make something better to fill that space, or at least we need to reduce the harm.
