Bluesky idea: if people who didn't agree with you change their opinions so that they do agree with you, why not be happy that you are making progress - rather than complaining that they are "only just catching up"?

I mean, I agree this is counterproductive. Welcome them to the cause. But at the same time, if that person had spent a decade screaming at you that you're a complete idiot who is destroying the country - I'd sympathise if you didn't personally invite them round for brunch.

Going vegan is a choice that has zero consequences to others in the real world. Going Nazi means people fucking die. If that's your basis for comparison, you're probably an unbearable asshole to begin with.

the problem isn't that people can't think it's that some people believe that it's impossible for a thinking person to disagree with them and that means they assume that anyone who does disagree must be a member of the irrational out group Other

here’s the thing — being wrong is, in many cases, an evil act. and you know it, that’s why you’re so defensive about it. if you truly realize you were wrong, you must admit fault and work to earn forgiveness. you, of course, and people like you, are too venal for that. too selfish, too greedy

Oh because you’re mad that people aren’t welcoming the “both sides are the same” people into the fold after their attempts to normalize Trump have all flopped 👍

I mean, if you're saying that to a person who published an article titled "Where Vegans Went Wrong" a year ago I think a bit of opprobrium is warranted

We *have* been telling them so, in fact. And many of the people we’ve been telling so, have made considerable money for what they said. Great that they’ve changed their minds. But there’ll be pressure to forget — and to let those folks go on profiting. That’s what worries me.

we've all encountered white liberalism before and the assumption that anyone who doesn't welcome it must be irrational/uneducated/uncivilised

Omigod what a whiny bitch. Maybe instead of being for s consolation prize, you could shit the fuck up and listen to the people who demonstrably know better than you

It’s more like this person made money by being either grossly incompetent or willfully ignorant in a way that contributed to the present moment, but let’s not hold people on positions of influence accountable.

*Waking up the next morning* *Sees massive number of notifications* "Huh, I wonder what tha.." "Oh. Oh no. Oh *NO*" ---- I can hope, but wouldn't put money on it.

It would probably go fine because when you make a choice borne of your own conviction, you don’t get riled up about what mildly annoying people have to say about it. If the person respond by eating a filet mignon out of spite, they weren’t good vegans to begin with (I’m not a vegan at all).

Vegans are dumb and shouldn’t be elected, veganism was stupid until I came around to it, my veganism will only last until that guy who stops running around biting chunks of flesh off of live animals, and he’s here because vegans were not nicer to meat eaters. Dumb vegans still won’t listen to me.

Grew up vegan, life long vegetarian. This is a heinously embarrassing thing you wrote for everyone to see. Reexamine your values. Comparing your dietary choices to people who have been targets of this system for hundreds of years while being ignored could be a place to see your mistakes and change

is the premise of this that vegans don’t take the opportunity to let people know they are vegan and how long they have been vegan? because in my experience vegans love doing that.

If that person has personally said that veganism is impractical and unrealistic insanity and that vegans are dangerous idiots, and still maintains that veganism was a stupid idea until now, and existing vegans are still suspect, then the analogy will fit.

You are, were, and continue to be a shitty person who just happens to realize that the things you were in favor of for other people suck when applied to people you relate to. You're a cad and a mollycoddle, feckless and soft of both body and wit. Repent with your whole body or not at all.

Are they actively trying to dominate the conversation about veganism and dictate how people who have been vegans for decades should approach living cruelty and exploitation-free? Are they insisting that it's really the vegans' fault they didn't understand? If so, you tell them to kick rocks!

You know there’s a lot of replies here explaining the reactions you’re mad about, but you seem to be ignoring them in favour of just arrogantly deciding everyone else is too stupid and evil to teach you anything.

Wow, so I am guessing alot of people are pointing out that it should depend on the situation, like someone being complicit with an authoritarian regime should not be just let off the hook. Cause now you've wandered into false equivalence territory.

Sure, women, black, and indigenous people have endured endless state violence, but have you considered that I'm paid to share my opinions and only yesterday I learned my opinions are dog shit and I should still be paid for being historically untrustworthy? I'm the REAL victim.

Exactly. This isn't "I didn't get it, now I do." This is "I got it, I just supported it until now, when I'm also at risk." Anyone coming over that doesn't abhor what they used to be is still at least partially on the side of "Actually, some killings are okay, just not so many."

Except vegetables don’t kidnap 5 years, separate them from their parents, and send them to countries in which they have never lived. Fuck off w these weak ass disingenuous bullshit.

But failing to recognise the rise of fascism and not being vegan aren't really comparable, are they, and making the comparison really doesn't do you any further favours as a serious commentator.

A lot of journos and commentators had a little list of the characteristics of fascism, assuring that no, he hasn't checked them all off so it's not fascism yet. They tick all the boxes when it's too late.

If someone only just decided to go vegan and began giving you advice on how to be a good vegan or started telling you why you should be vegan- how would you react to that?

Counterpoint You: I love the guy threatening to hit me Me: Are you sure? You: I love the guy threatening to hit me Me: That's a bad idea. You: The guy threatening to hit me, hit me. Me: Told you so. You: "I will just shout 'SOME OF US HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS' at them and see how it goes."

I am happy if someone goes vegan because it's not particularly consequential that they weren't. When it comes to an autocrat takeover and the destruction of civil society, I say they better wise the fuck up before it's too late and damn them to hell for being so stupid.

Here‘s an example of someone taking real accountability and doing repair work: bsky.app/profile/did:... Journalists who are now just coming to the realization that Trump is a fascist may learn from Rev Schenck:

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

He spent decades bringing the religious right to power. Now he's marching to undo it. Rev. Rob Schenck spent decades helping build the Religious Right—commingling church and state to advance conservative causes. Now, he says he must confront the damage he helped cause.

Jesus christ you are a fragile man 🙄 People aren't quick to accept those kinds of apologies because rarely if ever is there any acknowledgement of the people you basically called hysterical for years & even if there is it takes time to rebuild trust and fits like the one youre throwing- bad look.

It's not that we've been saying it for years. It's that liberals and centrists demonized us for doing so. Told us we were worthless, below worthy of consideration. We were told to shut up and be thankful we got to vote for right-wingers. Liberals shamed and shunned us for being right.

Counter to the counterpoint: I'm one of those "saying this for years" people - it provoked, among other silencing attempts, Neo-Nazi organizations taking out a hit on my life that I (obviously) narrowly survived. Perhaps if veganism caused similar 'existential threat' backlash you'd have a point.

Your first thought when you are devastatingly wrong about something should be “what else have I been wrong about?” And then you listen. Otherwise you don’t actually think you were wrong. You think circumstances have changed.

As much as anything, it is about their attitude. I mean, if (after months/years) you only just realise you are wrong, then you have spent months/years shouting about something about which you were uniformed. In ignorance, it is best not to have a strong opinion and to not yell about it.

Because who want a little medal for finally getting it have only just started doing the work, or maybe not even that, and are just riding the tide. People who are serious about doing the work understand why those who have been in it are frustrated & don't have time to coddle.

Because we're not happy. It just feels bitter. You only realized after the chickens came home, after the Imperial boomerang flew back, and you saw you were in the firing line too. And you expect an award for being right eventually?

Without acknowledgment of the part they played in causing significant harm over the years, it’s difficult to take their initial turnabouts as an anything other than face-saving.

This may be controversial, but I don't care if they're just doing it to save their face/skin right now if it gives us the numbers we need to improve the situation.

it’s not really “progress” if these people think they should continue to be thought leaders after being wrong on so many things—things that are not esoteric, mind you. they were wrong on the morals and ethics. the kindergarten stuff.

Why not both? People who have enabled fascism with their years of condescending denial bear some of the responsibility, and they should feel some shame. Journalists especially, whose job is to tell the truth.

Nobody owes you shit. Don't change an opinion for the acceptance of anyone else. Use your eyes and ears, and change your mind and behavior, and prove through your actions and not just your speech that you really have changed... and people still won't owe you a damn thing. You want a lollipop? Like

What validation were you hoping to achieve from this post? Out of curiosity? The vagueness of the white man pout fest leaves so much open to interpretation that we're all throwing scenarios atound of people not owing you shitz or white people seeking validation in these comments. Free the

Oppressed, punish the oppressor, because it is morally human to do so, not because you want a hug for changing. No one owes you hugs. That's how they get stabbed the back. Arms length at all times homie. And no one owes you a damn thing. We, however, owe them the entire planet back.

Are you going to trust us next time? Use your position of power to advocate for the position before it gets to that point? Make a difference ahead of time before people literally have to die while you get your head around it? Or do you just not like being held accountable for your inaction?

First, most conversions aren't of the Damascus road variety—they happen slowly, over time, and mostly privately. Second, people who publicly announce their conversion probably have ulterior motives. Third, this thinking risks the "let's look forward, not backward" mindset re prosecution, etc.

I 100% agree with not punishing behaviour you want to see. But I also agree with Atrios. It's natural to be wary of people who spent years insulting, excluding and demeaning you for thoughtcrimes like 'supporting the NHS' or 'disagreeing with transphobia'.

Because those people spent the last decade telling us that Trump was not a white nationalist, that there was a lot of crazy on both sides, that ignorant bad faith Republican positions were equal to actual policies. If you were wrong, don't bitch. Work to rectify, maybe with your giant FT platform.

I guess what they have to understand, is that given how very wrong they were for so very long, and how energetically they maintained (and continue to maintain in some way) that they were right, then maybe we're just not that interested in their opinion anymore.

I beg you to get off the Internet and talk to people IRL. I'm very politically involved and have been warning people about encroaching fascism for over a decade. And when someone comes to me and asks how they can get involved, I help them. As do most activists.

bergmayer@bergmayer.net

Pierre Courtade once said, 'I was right to be wrong, while you and your kind were wrong to be right.’ to Edgar Morin, who was expelled from the French Communist party for opposing Stalin’s policies. See also: premature anti-fascism. It’s a sentiment I expect to see quite a bit of in the future

Naw, dawg. People are dying because of your ignorance. And more often than not your change in opinion is disingenuous and you flop right back as soon as you can. Count yourself lucky that a lot of those people would probably still save your life. Not for much longer, though.

You aren’t the victims. What you are are enablers and collaborators of fascism. For that you all need to earnestly apologize and tell us what you will do to help fix the very fascism you have enabled with your normalization of it. You don’t get points for being wrong. You may get it for fixing it.

Saying Leftists overused the word fascist doesn't sound like that Atlantic writer is admitting they were wrong. At the very least they won't acknowledge leftists were right.

Okay, I'm going to make a good-faith attempt to answer this question, whose good faith is questionable at best. So when you're talking about suddenly "agreeing" with the left, you're not actually describing agreement in any substantive sense.

The left argues that unambiguous truth [X] is true, and people like you in the mainstream media spend years and years sneering at us for being so stupid as to believe that [X] could ever be true.

Then, when conditions render believing in the falsity of [X] prohibitive, you "change your opinions" on [X]. And I don't even necessarily doubt that you sincerely believe [X] to be true now. But the thing is that we go through this cycle over, and over, and over, and over again.

[X] has referred to so many things over the years, and in every case the left has been right about it for ages before it becomes received wisdom. And yet, the cycle is never broken.

The more the merrier. Plz catch up & show CHANGED behavior. Also don't expect those harmed by you to pat you on the back. Your question just gives folks an excuse to continue harm bc a justifiably angry person is still angry. If you have "caught up", you already understand. No cookie, just do better

If youre talkimg about extra sweetcorn on pizza henry, sure, more the merrier If youre talking about enabeling or collaboration with fascism, i think you may need to be more realistic

I can disagree, but find common cause with, someone who wants smaller government or is pro guns. But I just can't ever praise someone for coming around to my way of thinking that 1 plus 1 is two, that vaccines work, that climate change is real or that you can't arrest people based on skin color.

This is a very white privileged take. Regardless of whether you change your opinions, you must still be held accountable for the consequences of your previous opinions and the harm they may have caused.

Did you seriously just scold people who have been suffering & brutally oppressed for CENTURIES to just "be happy" that the violence has broken containment enough that mainstream white people can't ignore it & are also feeling it? I mean sure that is "progress" of a sort I guess but JFC dude

It's not like it's remotely difficult stuff. Genocide is bad. Colonialism is bad. Accelerating wealth of billionaires is driving down living standards for the majority. People being so executed by state goons is bad. "Oh sorrrrry it took me a few years to catch up."

Because that's nice in theory with no consequences. Meanwhile the reality is always banging your head against a brick wall with a painfully obvious situation. It descends and descends, causes endless harm, costs lives and benefits the absolute worst people imaginable.

How about, when you and others finally give up the ghost and admit they were willfully ignorant for years, y'all kindly shut up instead of asking for a round of applause? Oh. You finally caught up to the rest of us? Great, now what are you doing to help other than being a windbag?

Similar to this is when an argument reaches: "Ha! Now you're changing your position!" As an argument usually involves a desire to change the other person's position, shouldn't any shift be welcomed with grace?

It depends why. Why didn't they realise what they were saying up until the last column was wrong? Why didn't they give due attention to those people pointing out why they were wrong? Why can we hope they won't make the same intellectual mistakes again?

Because I don't have a lot of faith in people who were Nazis for 10 years and fully supported treason and child rape the whole time and cheered America being destroyed...they can change their opinions now when its convenient but their previous beliefs proved they were AWFUL Evil people

Fine, but changing one’s opinion needs to come with acknowledging that one was wrong to begin with. Because reconciliation without truth leads to abuse, Mr Mance.

I dunno, dawg. Given the pulpit that they have occupied (and made bank on by pedalling their terrible ideas) then either a public mea culpa or opening their damn wallets & financially contributing to fix the mess they helped create seems appropriate to me. How much can we put you down for?

I don’t owe them shit after a decade plus of gaslighting & vilifying their neighbors. They don’t need my approval to make moral choices & they don’t deserve my praise or acceptance for it. And if that turns them off of being a decent human & resisting tyranny, then they were pretending anyhow.

Have you considered that in repeatedly lying about the intentions of the far right and downplaying the state of things for your own profit and to the detriment of others over the course of years, you've squandered any trust people might have had in you and have much to do to regain it?

Why should people be "happy" with you? You've contributed to making their lives measurably worse. Only in genuinely working to reverse the damage you've caused will things change. That's how reputations *work*.

Henry when you hurt someone- like, you trip them up accidentally, or you vote in fascists who murder them and their friends- is it more important to help them out or to make sure they know you didn't mean it? It is about your moral cleanliness? Or are you going to help even if you get called names?

This is not what happened, Henry, and you know that. Jon Rauch did not change his opinions, he blamed the people who were right the whole time for his inability to see what was in front of his face.

While I think it is important to extend grace to people who change their minds from an abhorrent position to a more morally acceptable one, it also cannot be a painless change. If a person suffers no consequences for taking that initial, cruel position, they will not truly learn anything.

The next time they are in a position to make an ethical judgment call, they are still just as likely to make a selfish choice first if they believe they can just change sides down the line with no repercussions. There has to be some level of social cost to having advocated for the wrong side first.

If this is in reference to what I think, I can reassure you, they still think you're a childish moron idiot because the US only descended into fascism last week and no one could have foreseen it.

You can change but don’t expect the people you got paid to hurt to like you or want to prioritize your voice lmao. Just be quiet and listen to those people for a change.

Better blusky idea, if you arrive at an obvious conclusion literally years late maybe shut up and take the lead from people who worked it out before you. And have the humility to not whine people point out that maybe, just maybe, you're not that good at this.

we got that half bright Lincoln Project grifter, George Conway, deciding what he needs to do? is to move back to NYC & contest the primary for the NY 12th congressional district! b/c "It was like, huh, it's an open seat. This isn't crazy. I should think about this" this man obvs needed more bullying

If a person shares their epiphany by calling the folks who got there years ago 'hysterical pussy-hat wearers' that's my clue that they're not actually interested in understanding how it was that they were so wrong for so long, and are unlikely to be much actual use in the struggle now.

Those catching up should be willing to admit that they were late to the party. In practice they were arrogantly dismissive before, and they want to continue controlling the conversation now. Which means they will do it again.

Usually it's because they spent the time before that emphatically talking shit about the opinion. The least they can suffer is an I Told You So.

Oh for pete's sake: the issue wasn't and isn't that someone doesn't agree with us! It's the abject corruption, racism, ignorance, fascist sympathies etc. that allow some ppl to deny an obvious reality.

Your judgment has been, by your own admission, faulty. It was for a long time; you ignored many warnings. Understand that while some might be mollified to see you finally catch up to what was obvious, others aren't going to trust your judgment, and expecting them to displays unearned entitlement.

Idk man how much of an insufferable prick were you to those people before? How much did you dismiss their ideas as hysteria? Now that you know they're right, are you willing to listen and learn from them, or is your ego *still* the most important thing. These are often factors in how you're treated.

That kind of advocacy is fine for those unaffected by how wrong the opinion was in the first place. If that opinion drove choices that lead to material harm, we cant expect the people it harmed, nor those who love them, to be thankful. Pragmatism is useful, but we're not entitled to it from everyone

lots of people have changed their mind, started serving in the streets of mn, and been welcomed into the fold. we're mad at the pundits who open their mea culpas with, "after years of false alarms," or, "it was [overuse] ... to call you a fascist if you oppose abortion or affirmative action."

I've seen too many folks who have "changed their ways" but then recanted the moment they aren't getting enough praise, gratitude and attention to keep them happy. It sure would be nice to be able to trust their repentance without reservation, but that reservation remains a proven survival instinct.

Im skeptical because the caging and raping of children by ICE agents in 2017 should have been the grenade pin. Anyone still "on the fence" after that should not be invested in my approval. Spend that time working for better. The Lincoln Project is a prime example.

I guess to some extent the question is how did these gestural people treat those they disagreed with earlier? If they characterized them as idiots, or naive, or alarmist or unserious in their views, then sure it might be *nice* if those people could be generous when they come to their senses…

… but it does feel like it’s asking quite a lot, particularly when - for example - there was a disparity of influence, with the people who were wrong having more power, influence etc. and/or the situation we were all confronted with was profoundly scary and impactful.

For example, if the general public said, “the president is a dangerous unhinged fascist who is going to attack his own people, stamp down on civil rights, and destabilize international affairs” and people with influence just said, “nah, it’s fine”, then I sort of think it’s okay to be angry at them.

If the change is genuine, sure. If the change is strategic because they know they have gone too far, no. That just means if given the opportunity to change again, they will.

There is a huge difference between a difference of opinion and ignoring all the obvious signs of what was happening because it interfered with your beliefs. Or who was paying. And ignoring fascism. Sorry. But just saying my bad after this shit means nothing to me.

My grandfather was a minister, one of the good kind, and when he was trying to grow a small congregation, yes, he was happy to see new people. Can’t say he ever tried snarking at the new arrivals. Pretty simple to take the open arms approach if “everyone is welcome here” is one of your core beliefs

If you are a random citizen who merely thought we’re overreacting, I welcome your change of heart. If you are a professional politics knower who repeatedly attacked us as hysterical and over the top, I expect a little remorse and self-reflection. Repeating my talking points isn’t enough.

I feel like the people castigated online for eventually reversing their bad opinions, were essentially PAID to have those bad opinions and change them only when it’s finally politically expedient.

Be happy? Are you out of your mind? Do you think this is about ego? That we got some nice warm feeling of validation from being right? Y'all had to had shit happening on your own neighborhoods to believe things we've been trying to alert everyone for years, and you want a fucking welcome committee?

If this is about the man who, in the opening article, said it was wrong to call anti-abortion activists fascists, I hope he goes and fucks himself quite frankly

Because when some liberals are telling us that we're overreacting for years and actively work against our efforts to stop what's coming we don't have any guarantee that they won't do the same thing next time.

If it took multiple murders in the street to convince you, you deserve to be shamed for not paying attention earlier. This isnt like cutting out eggs because how they treat chickens makes you sad, its recognizing the rise of fascism after being taught to see the signs in fucking middle school

That's not for the 99% of people who never saw themselves marching & protesting but are now. It's for the 1%, the politicians, the pundits who spilled oceans of ink for decades disparaging the left as hysterical and alarmist. We were right and THEY KNEW BETTER. But they'll persist in neoliberalism.

We don't see them catching up we see them reluctantly dragging their feet, petulantly writing articles in the Atlantic in the key of "well i WOULD have called it Fascism years ago but you LEFTIES were so ANNOYING!" The people who could've stopped this for years never bothered. Now it's too late.

Except: that you are "only just catching up" now sucks. You see that as a "complaint" when instead it's just a fact. If that fact is so difficult to live with that acknowledging it bothers you enough to pitch a little fit, then you really haven't changed your opinions, have you?

When a journalist starts telling the truth only long after it has been readily available to all, then I can only conclude that they either didn't know or didn't care about what was true. Either should be disqualifying.

Since you're a fully captured writer for the financial industry, I can understand why you believe that fascism just happens and why you think that you should be let in to have influence over the people fighting it

Probably because having acted in a high-handed and arrogant manner when someone told you something you didn't want to hear in the past, you are now acting in a high-handed and arrogant manner about admitting they were right all along?

There's a big difference between two cases. Case one: "Other people saw something I did not, and I shut them down in error. I have learned from this and will change." Case two: "Other people saw something and I shut them down. They were wrong. But now I see this thing and I'm right."

There's no shame in being even loudly wrong if you can admit it and use it to change. The shame is reserved for those who are so wrong that they must acknowledge it, but who are so dishonest and vain that they cannot admit that they made a mistake, that they did harm, that they must change.

There is a fashionability to ideals; many have proven, by rescinding support for causes, that there is a not insignificant percentage of the population who will change sides when it seems advantageous or fashionable. If people are progressing, then they should learn just how far there is left to go.

My guy it’s not enough to change your opinion- you need to understand the harm you committed, and work to repair that harm. In short, you need to do the work. I recommend “On Repentance and Repair” by Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg. That does not mean self-flagellation. It means doing better.

If we are talking about regular citizens then yes, they should be given a lot of grace in catching up. If they are elected officials or paid pundits then they do not get the same grace. They don't get to be leaders if they can't see what is happening until it's too late.

I think maybe it has something to do with the years of abuse and condescension coupled with annoyance at just how far things had to degrade in order for the person to see the light. Like, did people *really* need to be executed in the streets? Did children really need to be stolen?

Are you offering your current column inches up to someone who was right? Are any of the columnists and pundits "just catching up" giving up their space to somebody who called it correctly?
