Don't let billionaires convince you slop is the future. They're used to managing & directing, not making things themselves. Of course they can't see the difference. They don't understand your love for the craft. Keep making personal, beautiful games. You've got my support 💖

FYI this post made a billionaire angry on the other platform, that should make you feel better.

seeing the quotes and replies on there makes me remember why i don't use that app anymore, jesus what an echo chamber

every time I'm forced to see a Twitter screenshot of these clowns I'm glad I deleted all my accts there blessed bluesky where they dare not tread

I won't dox myself but I'm also one of those former employees. The couple of years I spent contracted to Epic during the AI buildup and Tim's lies killed my love for my dream career. Choosing between a 200k/yr paycheck from Tim or drawing furry porn for loose change? Easy choice. Fuck that loser.

It may be equally stressful paying the bills in its own way but at least I don't have to do anymore security trainings where I get told people want to hack Epic because Epic is the Most Moral Company and the shining light of the industry, and evil bad men hate us and Timmy boy for our Values™ :^)

I won't lie, there have been months scattered through the last year where I net more in that month than I did every month working for some of the biggest publishers on the planet. The only issue is consistency. And I ain't even that good, I'm pretty sure I get by mostly cause of the shitposting.

People wonder why I never support epic. TI’m sweet is an absolute joke who despite being a literal 1%r argues with indie devs due to his desperate need to not FEEL like the bad guy. Spoilers Timmy you just announced the pointless death of blueprints to make ai bro shareholders happy… ur the badguy 🤡

like, he didn’t even have to take it personally and go “fuck you, you’re wrong” to defend himself. he could’ve just gone “hell yeah, if you want keep making projects by hand, you should do that. we find ai valuable and useful for what we do, but you should seek your own path and not feel pressured.”

it wouldn’t have made people happy about him promoting and using ai for games, but at least he wouldn’t look like a huge asshole who has completely lost his connection to reality even his analogy wouldn’t work either. even after c/c++ were mature, you could still write successful games in assembly

I honestly never thought I could hate Epic more and then Tim and team released their whole "we vibe coded everything and it works just as good as Steam.....even though it's missing 90% of Steam's features" statement.

See you'd think it would be hard for a CEO to find time to embarrass himself online but that's where the TIME-SAVING POWER OF AI comes in

Oh to have just a fraction of the privilege and unconcern required to think of life's stresses as something you can just alt-tab out of. Don't worry. Skills are just little bars you fill up while doing your skill-building animations and careers are just tech trees you spend your career points on.

In context of gamedev, that one makes a bit of sense. If you're building an engine you want other teams to build on top of, C is, uh, not the way. To be fair, C++ of the era was also awful, but less so. Modern C++ and Rust are much closer to what you actually want.

He’s talking about evolving technologies and capabilities. This is the man that created one of the very first 3D engines and games. It’s got nothing to do with “number be bigger”

I think it would be more fair to credit John Carmack if we're talking early 3D engines and games. Tim of course has done achievements in the past, but it's also fair to judge on what he's saying nowadays

Not gonna lie, I'm kinda impressed that your relatively random tweet struck such a nerve that Tim Sweeney *and* Elon Musk felt it necessary to dignify your message with a response. Kenney: "If you choose not to use generative AI, you have my support. 💖" Epic Games and Grok: "We must destroy them."

The man is actually so fucking obsessed, it's crazy. Every single time someone has a not-so-good thing to say about AI, he just materializes out of thin air to piss and scream as if a personal friend of his is being gruesomely attacked before his eyes

It's funny every time a well-moneyed CEO turns into a reply guy. Like, don't they have golf they're supposed to be playing, or something?

I love and trust your work, but even so I had to check this on Twitter to confirm it was real. Wild! Tim Sweeney, a billionaire, weighing in on trusting billionaires. And so poorly too. No receipts. No argument. Just proving how disconnected he is.

"Up yours!" Holy shit... I would LOVE to meet him in real life and tell him how utterly pathetic he is and how he is perceived by others. I want to see him break so fucking bad...

Ironic. I just watched a video yesterday (Extra Credits, I think?) talking about how the Marvel/Star Wars game has been deemed to have to be made with 100% AI workflows. So yeah, he's pretty comfortable with it. Pretty consistent to every CEO I've seen.

Doesn't this counter his own arguments? That he specifically doesn't need to write code anymore because AI is the greatest? Bragging he still writes code kind of contradicts his own nonsense.

Tim is such a child. He's spent years buying exclusivity rights to games, trying to sue steam & doing literally, nothing, to improve his store & compete. Now that he's got AI doing the work for him? His store is relying on Valve's proton for compatibility with linux & has been called out on it.

When did he last be a cognin the game development machine and not the guy at the crank. 1992? Even if you were still in the suck on the daily, you wouldn't be remotely representative of other billionaire CEO's, and a modicum of self awareness would let you realise that. GTFOH Sweens

Interesting choice of words ("Up yours!") as a response to an encouragement of game devs that avoid AI. Hopefully unintentional.

I said it once, and I'll say it again: Kenney never disappoints! ♥ With a single message, Kenney made a beautiful point and pissed off a spoiled billionaire whose idea of touching grass is crouching in Fortnite.

He's the last author on a 2022 paper on the Verse programming language. In my experience in academia, the last person generally accounts to nothing more than a supervisor. He equates managing the work with doing the work himself, which I guess shouldn't be surprising for an AI bro.

as if telling the beloved free game assets guy to "Up Yours!" will be the thing that finally convinces people what a cool and correct everyman he is. such a loser

“Your employees are liking my post, they reach out to me all the time” damn dude do you have a public domain asset of a cuck chair for the guy too

Such a vile personal attack and you weren't even talking to him lol. I remember when you jumped in to ease the burden when a ton of us Unity developers were stuck contemplating whether we'd even have a toolkit by the end of the week. Thanks for always striving to give the community so much.

Well it makes sense when you think about it, since he has so much free time with AI doing everything for him he has time to be a little weeny sweeney on twitter.

the fact he sees AI as like just another hardware or software upgrade really says a lot.. c++ didnt stop people from making games, 3D didnt stop people from making games but AI does stop people from making games. thats what he and the entire industry is pushing for. thats why people are against it!

His response to "they don't make things or understand the love of the craft" was "I run a company" Utterly proving your point. This idiot will never get it.

The things is, I feel like this explains a lot. It seems like an improvement to him and therefore it must be the correct assessment because it's how he sees it and his is the only vision that matters. He thinks his opinion is a fact and that the rest of the world needs to adapt to him.

Is it bad faith, or do you really not understand what he’s talking about? It’s about evolving technologies and capabilities. 3D was simply not possible for many years. I’m sure you do not remember those years.

I don't remember when people moved from C to C++ and then become rapid C++ zealots C++maxxing 24/7, people just used whatever was useful and anyway people still just use C with classes nowadays when they use C++

I've been through some shifts in technology and you're right. People just chose whatever was best or nice and it all naturally shifted without the need of 1,000 bots on social media convincing what's the best for you

AI is where the tech tree is cut down, Tim. It is bound by training data and thus only yields mediocrity. It can produce trivialities fast, but will never make anything exceptional. Us facing hard problems is what sparks innovation! But for that we need to be comfortable doing hard things, Tim.

Sorry, no clue who that might be. To my knowledge was the CEO seat of epic games filled with an open can of rotten worms and Chlamydia. But thank you for the info regarding as to what level of self-engrandure I can expect of that muppet.

Tim's always been kind of a "I know better than everyone else" kind of asshole, so this isn't terribly surprising. But being this kind of belligerent is not gonna convince people that LLMs can actually be useful for coding more than just slop (which it supposedly can be, other issues aside).

Coding is basically one of the few fields where "AI" *might* be useful (as a tool), *if* you put issues with training data aside, though I haven't tried it myself. Video-based mocap as well (you don't need problematic training data for that). Anything else artistic, though? Ew, no.

For a short while I was trying it for code review for a personal project, not a fan. The way it trains data without any consent or consideration for FOSS licenses really bugs me, not to mention other ethical issues related to it. Left FOSS projects due to other devs using it so much.

Sure would be nice if the bubble burst and we had open source models with more ethical training data, though, I really would rather not give these companies my money or deal with the ethical issues of working with these tools.

It's extra funny to me cause I think most good C++ devs know it is not C but upgraded. And most good game devs/designers know 3D isn't just 2D but better. His own analogy just shows his lack of creativity.

Had to open x for the first time in a couple forevers to see myself, and wow - you got 2 billionaire so upset they replied directly! Honestly that's pretty goat.
