Is asking someone to leave the beverages at home for an interview as fussy as reminding a lady to wear pantyhose or a gentleman to ask before lighting a cigarette? We assembled a team of Post staffers across the newsroom — and commenters — to find out: https://wapo.st/4dwx0LS

I generally evaluate applicants based on skill, attitude, and experience. Somehow whether they're holding an iced coffee or not hasn't made it on my checklist.

Not only do you not being an iced coffee to an interview you don’t accept one if offered before the interview. It’s a question designed to see if you would waste their time (I was an IT manager and was in many job interviews). Maybe it should be but it is.

In my line of work you have to go through a temp agency first. Work at the shop for a few months. If you are getting hired in a job interview is just a formality. This article is bullshit. How about highlighting the threat of fascism brought to us by the tech oligarchs.

I want to live in the world that Washington Post columnists live in, where there are zero meaningful problems and we have nothing but time to focus on this kind of pointless, petty bullshit.

I forgot what specific stupid thing you did that made me stop subscribing to the Bezos rag, but I enjoy being reminded that I did so by all the subsequent stupid things you do.

No, it's worse and stupid. Women shouldn't need to wear hosiery just to get a job and any self-respecting interviewee wouldn't light up in the room. Who the fuck smokes indoors? Coffee at least shows they're showing up prepared and with some caffeine in their system! IT'S AN INDICATION OF WORK ETHIC

An addiction? That's a pretty fast assumption to make about someone. A truly prepared person would KNOW if someone judgy is going to criticize them having a drink. I suppose you wouldn't bring coffee to interview someone, huh?

Pulitzer material right. ... ... I'm so... Emotional rn* *Derision counts as "feeling" yeah?** **Hang on... Might just be spite*** ***Hot dang that counts too!

Is talking about these things at the interview a bad idea? 1. Concentration Camps 2. Disappeared People 3. Graft & Grift by Politicians 4. Money in Politics 5. Foreign Powers along with Political and Wealthy Classes Colluding to Destroy Democracy 6. Hunger and Poverty 7. The Elephant on the Table

This is the hard hitting journalism needed in these times where pedophiles hold the reins of power and AI threatens every facet of our life.

I can't believe this is an article in an allegedly-legitimate news journal. What the actual f*** are you writing? The world is a dumpster fire, and you're talking about... Coffee at job interviews? You're nuts.

Offices have coffee pots. Coffee is professional. Hot coffee is pretty normal at an interview. Why is iced coffee the issue? Who do you think of drinks iced coffee? Things which seem feminine are clocked as unprofessional. Iced coffee is seen as feminine so it is seen as unprofessional.

i didn't get it but thought it was good then i clicked through and it's the wrong fucking article

The funny thing to me is how different the reception to this is here compared to twitter. Twitter >most people agree with the article and shame anyone who would dare show up without their ass ready to be fucked by a minimum wage job Bsky >most people agree banning coffee at an interview is dumb.

I thought you guys being bought by Blofeld would be the end of your journalism, but I guess I was wrong... this is Pulitzer stuff! Breaking the hard scoops and speaking truth to power! You're back bayybeeee!

I will say that I was interviewing someone for a job once, sitting on our loading dock in Manhattan, when he saw a friend across the street and LEFT the interview to talk to him for 5-10 minutes. Then came back as if nothing had happened.

Clearly someone's great great granduncle framed that question. Those who have hired & fired employees will take interview behavior into account when deciding which candidate to hire. So, no, don't ask a candidate to do any of these suggestions. Take the applicant as they present themselves.

A question like this makes me think about how the 45th/47th President of the United States is a convicted rapist and felon who grovels to our country's worst adversaries, has vandalized the White House, destabilized the global economy, and is desperate to prevent investigation of his pedophilia.

My first thought would exile my comment to the hidden realm, so I’ll leave this for the ratio.

if the interviewer complains i'll just say "actually it's common knowledge that bringing drinks to interviews makes you look more powerful and smart" and the interviewer will say "You are totally right! It DOES make you look strong and smart! Would you like to hear more ways to ace this interview?"

Discourse that is seemingly more on Twitter than on here. Supposedly Gen Z is more likely to bring iced coffee to an interview and other people think it is inappropriate. It was a broader discourse than just iced coffee but iced coffee was a prominent example.

iirc it started with some recruiter who works for fortune 500 companies' list of job interview advice she tells her clients Which like in that setting, fair enough but online can't just ignore shit that doesn't apply to them

I’m gonna be so real I don’t want any hiring manager that would take issue with this to have any power over me. They don’t think I’m professional, cool they’re almost certainly going to be an absolute nightmare to work for. Not a good fit for either of us.

I like how big the picture is. It really gets how much you've shifted to dumb clickbait articles. Please start doing articles like, "this child actor is now 80-- and looks unrecognizable!" You guys are doing great.

WTF!!! If an office job, you shit shave shower and put on your best rags. No coffee, no durries, no chewing gum. Adopt a respectful posture and demeanour and show interest. It’s not hard.

You'd think there would be more to report on given the implosion of global oil markets due to a war the US immediately lost but still refuses to surrender, plus the impending destruction of democracy at home and tech companies attempting to destroy the world so they can rule the ashes

Reminding a lady to wear panty hose is equivalent to bringing coffee to an interview (no), or someone asking before lighting a cigarette (of course they should)? Is this the 1960s? Sexist and idiotic….

I’ve worked corporate in Canada for 30 years. Part of my job is getting the meeting room for the interview set up…including having coffee, tea & water set up. I have seen candidates bring their own & brought my own when I’ve been interviewed. Never heard it being the reason someone wasn’t hired

So now you’re just going for rage-baiting clicks to boost your social engagement scores? That’s what you do now instead of journalism? Got it.

feels like the only people who have jobs are fucking idiots who don't understand why you'd need to wet your lips or remain alert in a job interview

No? People who give speeches typically have a beverage with them. People have water bottles and water coolers at work, and have office coffee pots and coffee orders and such. Why is liquid unprofessional?

there's an argument that if a prospective employer is going to lose their minds over this, it isn't going to work anyway. a Millennial i knew would wear odd socks to interviews for this reason. looks like stakes were raised since. (she got the job, at google... but google was different then too.)

Remember when you fuckers at WaPo were actual journalists once? Now all you are is a complicit cog in the destruction of the United States by racist, nationalistic billionaires. Congrats, I guess.

This is such a shit-take. Confusing the superficial presentation of an applicant with their job-relevant qualities is exceedingly shallow, and risks self-defeating hiring decisions. Does your office actually prohibit employees from having a drink at their work space? Doubtful.

Bring the iced coffee to the interview—it in and of itself will reveal more about you to the interviewer Do you drink it down and then loudly belch? Do you spill it? Do you get to the bottom and noisily slurp it? Do you wipe up the water ring it leaves in the table?
