every country has an endemic Type of Old Person, like how the Southern US has “peepaws that set up at the Hardee’s to talk shit”. what is your country’s Endemic Type of Old Person?

I visited Malta once and got lost. Three old men were sat on a fallen tree trunk, just like in this Asterix comic book, and very helpfully helped us. I believe they're to be found everywhere around the Mediterranean.

Here in rural south, they drive their atv to the gas station and sit outside gossiping, when not playing the gambling machines set up in the back.

Hungarian Romania has roving bands of old ladies descending on someone’s house sometime after breakfast to drink 100-proof plum brandy and talk smack until it’s time to make dinner. When I did a shot at 10 am, one of them nodded and murmured “Good girl” and I have been riding that high ever since.

On the Isle of Wight, especially at this time of year and in the autumn we have groups of Fat Old Man on Holiday with Wife Standing Outside Hotel Smoking While Advising Female Runners How To Run

In Hartford we have a Portuguese bakery where restless retired husbands who get in the way in their wives’ kitchens go to drink coffee eat baked goods and talk smack

Turtles seriously need sun. Without it, their shells grow incorrectly. For some species, it can thicken into a heavy pyramid of bone that’s debilitating to the animal. So smile at those old guys.

The small town Texas version of that is the “old guys who drink coffee all morning at Dairy Queen”. The man who acquired the DQ franchise rights for Texas planned them to be de facto community center of small town Texas. He would scout locations and choose who he would franchise to, and help with $$

Since uni is largely free in Austria and lectures are public there is a quite large demographic of seniors sitting in many uni lectures, and one very specific type of old man who sits in lectures and attempts to have a conversation with the lecturer, is a very common phenomenon.

Extra points if it's a lecture on a contemporary history topic and they start talking about how the lecturer is wrong because they were there and it was all completely different.

Lower East Side, Manhattan: Older guys sitting out front of a dark storefront, playing dominoes on a rickety folding table and sipping either beer or Cafe Cubano while smoking cigs and arguing in Spanish.

Here in Ontario if they’re poor they spend the mornings in clumps drinking coffee at Tim Horton’s and solving all the problems. If they’re wealthy they’re lining the bar in the late afternoon after golf. The former are far less obnoxious.

Now I'm wondering how long till my generation is Old People and we hang around taprooms all day because that's where we raised our kids and we miss them collectively.

In Sweden we have groups of retirement age ladies who go to museums, libraries, opera, the theatre, author evening talks at the bookstores etc, and generally keep culture alive. Any still living husbands like dogs and hunting in the deep woods, and/or right wing populist stuff on the internet

Came here to say something similar! They do senior training at the gym and always have a thermos of coffee and a pair of hiking pants, even if you don’t see where they could have stashed it. The men…yeah, I prefer that they stay in the woods so we don’t have to run into them…

I know - just inexhaustible energy and curiosity, always working on something interesting and always interested in what *you* were doing and offering support. I miss seeing her at comics gatherings :(

I noticed that Greece harbors large populations of old men who sit outside bars at 11:30 AM to smoke cigarettes, drink raki, and consume fried squid

My land of origin contains little old men who Understand a Craft and possibly perform it. If they perform it, they're a load bearing part of that country's industrial base. And horrifying old women in black who have probably--another, definitely--killed. Seventh Sea was right

It kind of just happens to you when you spend enough time in Greece. The hanging out culture is next level and now my friends in Boston are starting to acquire it (with my encouragement of course). For me it started by hanging out on milk crates at the kiosk my friend worked at,

then onto plastic lawn chairs around a small table (for coffee and tsipouro and beer) at a kiosk another friend’s uncles owned, to now, at the same friend’s new fish tavern in Piraeus. It’s great.

The cider that they won’t serve you a pint of unless your family’s been in the village since Norman times. It’s either called scrumpy or suicider, with apologies to Terry Pratchett.

My husband and I named the category “bronzing uncles” after the large groups of shirtless older men in Turkey who sit at the seaside/on bridges drinking, smoking, and fishing

Also, here on Crete, we have the old shepherds who look like Moses, with wild hair and beards that they cut once a year, for Easter. Every now and then, they get pissed off about something, storm the airport, and beat the shit out of the cops with their shepherds’ crooks.

Not an entire country, of course, but in Chicago there’s a sizable contingent of old dude—often polish—who read newspapers together an scream (in polish) at the 7-11 window counter, refilling their small coffee until ~3pm

I live in one of the most multicultural cities in thr world (Toronto) and the proof is we have literally all of them. But my favorite type has gotta be Mows The Lawn Shirtless Guy. Something about turning 75 just makes you allergic to shirts somehow

In parts of greater Los Angles, it was old men who’d drag a kitchen chair outside their apartment and sit and stare at everyone all day. Sometimes while smoking. The old women were often seen pushing around “grandma carts” containing groceries.

I'm in Toronto so we have every Type of Guy imaginable; my neighbourhood specifically is mostly young families like mine but we have a large Ukrainian diaspora and also a major Irish pub so we have the classic Old Person of those cultures heavily represented.

In my area of San Francisco we get the Senior Coffee crowd. McDonalds has an unadvertised USD1 large coffee for folks over 60 or so, so they gather there after the morning rush is over.

There’s a kind of “Yugoslav Uncle” guy we have who is like 50-60 but older looking because cigarettes, in a track suit, no socks, leather slippers, with a small speaker (boombox when I was a kid, probably phone speakers now) playing some generic techno, at the café

In Edinburgh there is a type of old lady who lives alone in a 11 bedroom, £3 million house. She owns a small, very angry, grey dog.

I feel like my specific neighborhood has a bunch of old guys who used to be race car drivers and now drive the coolest looking, least safe old cars around imaginable. But goddamn they are beautiful cars. They're so beautiful they got me into cars, and I didn't give a shit before living here!

In the later years of my grandpa's life he had aquired a gang of usually shirtless old men he turned into a newspaper delivery empire. They'd show up at their porch at 4 AM and start drinking bloody marys on the porch. Rural East Texas.

Canada: Sitting in Tim Horton's for hours nursing bad coffees & eating sclerotic donuts, complaining about having to pay taxes for services they no longer use and that the country is in the toilet because things have changed from 50 years ago, despite it still being voted a Top 3 country to live in.

Was in Toronto and needed something from the drug store. Google sent me to this very old building with no windows. Walked in and it was a mini mall. All the old Turkish men were drinking coffee in the food court… 😂

Sinewey grandpa interested in firewood, rambling, and geneology. And Your cultural boomer gran in Fun And Wild etnic inspired outfits and some form of crafts usually knitting.

They dont need to be ethnically inspired. Theres also my fave: old Lady who either a) wears only one color (orange for example) or b) wears the color combos she wanted to wear as a kid (orange and pink for example)

Spiritually, I’ve always been that very specific southern older lady who can best be described as “Worried that someone, somewhere, might be hungry. And usually determined to remedy that.” I caught it from all the actual older southern ladies like that. “Just as easy to make a big batch!”

Those peepaws are usually found in close proximity to the southern meemaw who goes to the salon to get that hair did even if Ragnarok is currently happening. Also used the super hold hairspray. And in earlier generations, she smoked. She thought secretly, but everyone with a sense of smell knew.

I live in San Francisco, so our elderly population tends heavier to Asian folk. We have the Asian Bus Lady and the Asian Fishing Man. I suspect there is a good Chinese word for them, but I do not know it.

The Bus lady is the fear of MUNI, they are getting on that bus if they have to pass through you physically. They are an unstoppable force of transit nature, you can find many YouTube examples of this person, outside of transit they are reasonable people

The Fishing Man tends to be found on our piers and mainly at night. But they will be on those piers all night holding forth with other Fishing Man types. They may also be found on our beaches during the day, but that tends to be more multiracial

here in suburban metro-detroit, they are obsessed with their lawns, and their neighbors' lawns, too. i had to go drive my mom to some doctor shit on friday, may 1st, which is the beginning of "growth season" w/enforceable city rules and by the time i got home at like 11am someone had called and...

...gotten someone from the city to come put a notice on my door about mowing my lawn. bear in mind it has been raining the last few days, so the grass grew quickly/didn't have a good opportunity to mow it. somebody waited until open of business on the first day they could and called in to rat on me.

funny thing is i *was* going to mow it that friday before i got that notice, knowing one would probably be coming soon, but then i saw it and was like, "i know they probably watched the guy put the notice on my door, then me find it, with great celebration... so i'll wait until sunday night."

leven with the city behind them, i will still prove to whichever neighbors are that petty that even in defeat i can be just as petty w/ malicious compliance when it comes to really stupid shit like, "i haven't mowed my lawn b/c it didn't start growing until a couple days ago." it's like every year.

Hawaii’s “kūpuna” are small, dynamic ladies often to be found on theBus, going to visit someone with a bunch of flowers and a plastic bag containing food dishes. If engaged in conversation, they will startle you with their anecdotes: One was a survivor of Hiroshima; another, a 1920s “picture bride.”

While in the Philippines, in the mountain province on Luzon, with my Filipino then-girlfriend, an elderly woman hitched a ride in the jeepney we'd hired. She had tattoos on her arms in the local tribal style, and remembered the Japanese occupation during WWII.

Is this related to retired Wall Street guys all self publishing their economic theory of everything and starting a web site and conference to promote it?

Sadly, mine in rural Texas is MAGA vets at VFW Hall drinking coffee & watching Fox. I know a few & they won’t budge from belief that Trump is the ultimate patriot. I just don’t get it. My great-great uncle’s back was full of D-Day shrapnel. Remainder of his life was in pain for fighting Fascism. 😔

“The Old Persons in the Southern US” are these people the same who voted for Trump? If yes, in our country we call this type of Old Persons ignorant racists.

In my region of France (Alsace) it’s old men playing cards in the local bistrot always sitting at the same table called the “Stammdesch” which loosely translates as the “regulars table”.

We have a diverse ecosystem of geezers. Curling, rodeo, rink, general. IMHO the type of geezer is highly dependant on the niche they can occupy. I live near a community rink. It's always surrounded by geezers arguing about ice making and stick curves. If I go home, they argue about cows.

We have two, and they really represent the dichotomy of Western Mass. The retired professors who hang out at the craft coffee shop and pass along knowledge and old farmers who are at the diner at 6 am before the work begins. Never the twain shall meet.

Oh yeah there's even a whole Bluey episode about them lol! And when they aren't caravanning a lot of the old fellas have a morning routine of being first in line for early morning visits to Bunnings, a golf course or the pathologists

It's not just NZ - we see this all the time in rural and especially mountainous California. Funnier are the ones who act like they're driving a sports car, pull out and floor it, and nothing much happens, so they eventually pull back into the driving lane exactly where they were.

Hwy 75, 200' above the Salmon River canyon, with no guard rails because Idaho is run by dipshits. Here is the grad student from Wisconsin driving a reasonable rate of speed. There is a septugenarian Calidiot in a 40' RV passing me at 90mph on a curve & then acting all offended when I do this 🖕

I found one of them driving on a highway in aus. overtaking a b-double around a blind corner over the double white lines in the oncoming lane of a fucking highway but not breaking the speed limit, because that would be illegal. I was lucky the hard shoulder was big enough for an entire car

This is regional/local: in some southern Ontario communities, small shopping mall with a coffee shop/pizza place e.g. Westcliffe on Hamilton Mountain, where elderly Italians (mostly men) sit in a group at a particular table. They go back to their house or nearby care facility at lunch/suppertime.

There are also the ones who retired, discovered their free travel passes and started doing 'school trips', who inhabit the cross border trains, usually on a Wednesday, off to do "one cultural thing and three pubs", as my dad put it.

Daddy and his crew of ex-Water ould boys got themselves in in all sorts of places us mere mortals never could too! Just by ringing people and asking with cheerful conviction that other people are just as incredibly nerdy about their work as they were!

My grandparents were all old school Tejano folks. Like, making sowing string a needles out of cactus in the rancheros and a day‘s trip to the nearest town folks. My dad was the first to be born in a hospital. 3 of them lived until their 90s and could outwork my as a teen in their 80s. Hard as nails

Just want to add both of my parents are the youngest in their family and I happen to be the youngest from them them so I’m not THAT old but got to be the one seeing from a distance

Not a country, but New York City has so many different flavors of Old Person. Italians in Bensonhurst who hang out at senior day cares, but call it a club. Chinese in Chinatown doing tai chi in playgrounds. The group that sets up at every park chess area and fleeces the tourists, game by game...

When I used to be a bouncer at an LGBTQ+ club in Mississippi sometimes I'd go to the McDonald's around the corner at 6 AM to get a breakfast sandwich when I got off work and just listen to the old fellas hold court on the dining room

I'm seeing elsewhere in the thread that they are endemic to Italy and Turkeye as well (Istanbul at least). I think they might be in them to the whole Mediterranean or at the very least the northern shore of it.

In the UK there's a specific group of older men who can be seen queuing outside of Weatherspoons pubs just before they open at 8am, and are sat with a beer at 8.02 am!

Keeps horses and large dogs. Looks somewhat like one of the sagebrush on the edge of their pasture. Is engaged in very long-running contest with their board-and-batten stable over which will physically collapse first.

In Tennessee, it’s not uncommon for the old men to meet weekly at the local firehouse or market with guitars, fiddles, mouth harps, or what-have-you to play gospel or old tunes. They meet at the market at 6:30 am every morning to talk about how the libs are trying to destroy everything good.

In Denmark, it's the local Pølsevogn. Every town has one because the country loves their hot dogs. You're guaranteed to find the old men there enjoying a pølse and Cacio (chocolate milk)!

In Texas there are towns (big and small) with local, family-owned taquerias. Retired cops, firefighters, educators congregate there for coffee and breakfast tacos and GOSSIP.

Where I went to uni there was an older flat capped type who’d stand in the corner of the bar with their dog drinking from their own tankard oblivious to the fact it had morphed into a somewhat trendier student bar over the decades.

Honestly, I feel like an old person now (I'm 56). Like, why can't I get apples that taste like apples anymore?! The last Cox's Orange Pippins I bought were very sweet, yet flavourless. At least I can still rely on Egremont Russets, when they're in season. For now.

In Oakland we have a unique varietal who will start a conversation between the porch and the street, and continue it as the street side ambles away, sometimes for up to two blocks and at volume.

The version of this I am most familiar with is the Oregon Coast Old Guy. During the day this Old Guy, travelling solo or in pairs, can be found driving to nearby boat ramps where they will talk to other Old Guys about fishing. If no fellow Old Guy is available, they will talk to the nearest...

...fish and wildlife employee. Generally about how much better fishing used to be, and how badly State Fish and Wildlife Agency has screwed things up. It should be noted that this particular type of Old Guy can also be found along the Columbia River, but this type tends to be more aggressive.

when i worked at mcdonalds in the morning shift there was a contingent of septuagenarians who came in within 5 minutes of open (5:30AM) to get their 79 cent coffee and sit at the table and shoot the shit for an hour every single day. in speaking with other mcdonalds vets this is Universal

This is also a common sight at mall food courts. I worked at a cookie place that had 25 cent coffee for seniors, and daily we had a gaggle of 5-8 guys come up to the counter as soon as we flipped the lights on. Then they posted up at their usual table to catch up and complain about young folks.

Their counterparts were the Silver Sneakers, groups of 2-3 elder women who would come to get their daily cardio workout in by doing laps around the mall. They would have a sample of a cookie (1/4 piece) as "reward" for completing their step goals. Almond mom behavior imo, but they were usually nice.

Yep. We had free senior coffee at the time, so there was extra incentive. The summer I worked mornings there was an old guy who came in at the dot of 7 every morning and ordered a senior coffee and a burnt English muffin. And if they didn't burn the muffin enough, Ernie would tell us about it.
